SharePoint List Sorting Driving Me Nuts! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I thought this was going to be easy... HA!

Here is the plan I was attempting.  I wanted to create a SharePoint list.  In that list I am allowed to make folders and, of course, list items themselves.  Each list item would be a mere link to files located on my companies shared Network Drives.  The list items work great!  No problem there.

Indeed, the creation of folders also works great!

    All is well, right?  Nope...

I then want everything sorted by their TITLE (aka NAME).  No dice!  WTF!!!  I can sort by URL but the URL locations are not alphabetical at all.

So then I thought, I'll outsmart SharePoint and add a custom field called "SortName" where I could just type in the "TITLE/NAME" and then sort the view by "SortName".  Again, worked great until I found out I can't add a field to a folder!  UHGG!!

The closest I can seem to get to my end-goal is to great a "GroupBy" column and use that.  The problem with that is that I wanted to allow my users to have multiple subfolders if they so choose.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to offer on this notion.
