What do the ampersand values mean? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I run:

wmic path Win32_PnPEntity where "PNPDeviceID like '%VEN%'" get PNPDeviceID, Status, Manufacturer, Service

I get things for disk controllers like:

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2018&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_04\3&3AA59A3&0&B8 <- 0xB8 is the PCI Bus/dev/func

But this is not always true.

For the wmic cmd below the last part of PNPDeviceID is 5&316C4D76&0&000A00 or 4&264A5717&0&050000. What doe these 3&, 4&, 5&, etc mean and where is that documented?

wmic path Win32_DiskDrive get PNPDeviceID, Manufacturer, SerialNumber, DeviceID

  • They do not "do" anything.  They are part of the deviceID.  Search for articles on PnP devices and drivers to learn about PnP.
