Unable to install Fedora 29 x64 Workstation on Windows 10 Pro 1803 Hyper V

    Question

  • I am unable to install Fedora 29 x64 Workstation on Windows 10 Pro Hyper V. Windows 10 Build 1803 (April 2018 Update).

I am using Generation 1 VM with legacy NIC. I tried using Generation 2 VM, it never boots into ISO.

When I start the VM it shows the initial loader. I select the option to boot from ISO. It loads the initial kernel and goes into a black screen.

I suspect a graphics driver issue. Hence I added a 3D video adapter, the issue remains the same. My host machine has Intel HD 350 Graphics Driver. The drivers are already installed.

I even tried to directly run the setup instead of booting from the ISO, but it goes into a black screen.

Please advice on how to resolve the issue. Thanks

    Rajiv

Fedora is not listed as a supported guest.  You may want to find a Fedora forum to ask for assistance there.

Or you could try posting to the Hyper-V/Linux forum located at https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=linuxintegrationservices.  Maybe the Linux experts there will have an answer, or the answer may already be posted in the forum.

  • Hi,

If you use a Generation 2 VM, make sure to disable the Secure Boot option.

Did you also have a look at the post below?

  • The Fedora version in the forum post above is version 28 and it could also possibly be on a different Windows 10 build. If the workaround in the above link didn’t work and as this is not officially supported I would try to ask in the Fedora forums.

  • I used a Generation 2 VM along with a 3D Video Adapter. The OS installation went through fine but it doesnt boot into full GUI. It gets stuck on "Started GNOME Display Manager". The same happens when I try to boot the OS in Safe Mode.

I will try asking on Fedora forums. Looking at the supported Guest OS list, I am thinking of moving to CentOS.
