Sharing Error (Sharepoint/OneDrive) in Office 365 Suite

    Question

  • Hello,

I've come across an interesting error, and am not quite sure what is going on, but have a hunch that it has to do with the location of the file.

If I create or upload an office document (docx, xlsx, pptx) to my personal area of the OneDrive/Sharepoint page (https://sharepointcompanypageurl-my.sharepoint.com/personal/) I can share it directly from the web browser with "Edit" or "View" rights and it works fine.

However, if I open up the document within Excel 2016, Word 2016, or PowerPoint 2016 and click "Share", I get the following "Sharing Error" dialog box:

Sharing failed for the following invitees:

    Invitee            Result

<e-mail address>   The invitation sent to this email address was returned. Please check the email address and try again.

This actually happens with everyone. It seems as if the Office 2016 suite has problems sharing directly from the desktop applications if the files are in our own personal OneDrive account, but you can actually share the file if you log into the Office Portal and go to your document in Sharepoint/OneDrive and share it from the web.

Is this normal behavior? Can this be fixed? What would you recommend?

  • UPDATE: Interesting find, but I can actually share the file using Office 2016 on the Mac (Excel 2016, etc.). For some reason it's Office 2016 on Windows that isn't working properly (it does the same on multiple Windows PCs).

SECOND UPDATE: After sharing it through the Mac OS X version of Office 2016, I can now share all files through the Windows version of Office 2016. This is a weird issue.
