Recovering digital certificates RRS feed

  • Question

  • We had certificates we used with Internet Explorer to access secure websites at a client location. We had a server crash and had to rebuild our Active Directory network, and recreated user profiles on the workstations, and restored all data from the backups.

We are not sure how to transfer our certificates from the old user profiles to the new user profiles. We tried using a program like ProfWiz to attach a temp user account to the old user profile, but there are no certificates listed under the Personal section in IE certificates in the old profile. We also have redirected folders for Documents and Desktop, but no roaming profiles. The redirected folders in the old profile are still pointing to the old server, so at login we get messages that it couldn't access \\server\share\user\Desktop, and so on.

I have not been able to find much info about how certificates are stored on a lower level (files? registry?), so I am not sure what needs to be copied or restored in order for these certificates to work under the new user profiles. The workstations are Windows XP. Any ideas?
