Can you manage as administrator the auto grow settings in DPM2010 ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    I have a Question :

We have now a diskcapacity of 27,9 TB on our DPM 2010 Server, with 27,5 TB allocated disk space ( Auto Grow is on ) and we use
    12,9 TB Disk Use.
Can you manage the autogrow settings ? because the DPM 2010 Server allocate a lot of diskspace now.

    Who has an answer ?

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi,

The proper approach to setting up a protection group is to do some pre-planning of how much disk space each data source requires.

We have storage calculators and formulas at the following sites:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2010/09/02/new-dpm2010-storage-calculator-links-sep-2010.aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399090.aspx

If you plan correctly, auto-grow will not need to occur.

However, to answer your question outright, if autogrow is selected, then DPM will add 25% or 10GB which ever is greater each time it occurs to the volumes needing more space.  Those number are not configurable.  If you over-allocate to the recovery volume, you can shrink it after you have the majority of the recovery points created based on retention period.

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot for your information, every change is important to use the DPM 2010 calculator when you use auto grow on your
    protectiongroups.

This may be correct for your scenario. But for our (my) and all the others I know, it is not. We cannot estimate all our data growth close enough. That means, growing volumes is part of the daily business.

I would also very much like to change the autogrow parameters. I'm shure they are hidden somewhere in the database.

So is anybody here willing to tell us where oder do we need to search for it?

  • Hi Peter,

If autogrow is selected, then DPM will add 25% or 10GB which ever is greater each time it occurs to the volumes needing more space.  Those number are "not configurable" - they are hard coded in the product and no secret keys to adjust them.  Auto-grow will not occur more than once within a 15 minute window, also not configurable.

    Cheers
