Question about upgrading to CU5 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a question about upgrading our SCCM environment to the latest version SCCM 2012 SP1 CU5. I understand we could and should upgrade directly to SCCM 2012 R2 but we still have some planning to do as we are looking to migrate our SCCM environment over to a new virtual machine with Windows 2012 R2 & SQL 2012 installed. Therefore we are just wanting to get updated to the last CU for our SCCM version.

We use SCCM for Operating System Deployment and appears we have Assessment and Deployment Kit ver 8.59.25584.

    Current environment:

    Windows 2008 R2 (Virtual Machine)
    SCCM 2012 SP1 version 5.0.7804.1000
    SQL 2008 R2 ver 10.50.6220.0
    WSUS 3.0 SP2

Can we upgrade directly to CU5 from our current version or is it recommended to upgrade CU in stages?
Do we need to upgrade any other component within the SCCM environment before upgrading to SCCM 2012 SP1 CU5?

Thx in advance for any information provided.

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 CU5 is far from the latest version. I don't even think that 2012 SP1 is even supported anymore.

For 2012, the latest version is 2012 SP2 CU4 or 2012 R2 SP1 CU4 (if you are entitled to R2) so you should really plan on upgrading to one of these, or better yet, ConfigMgr Current Branch 1610 (if you are entitled to it).

Why migrate? Why not just upgrade and then if you need to get onto a new system, use a site backup and restore?

  • Thx for response. Are there special requirements to upgrade to 2012 SP2 CU4 and do you know what the url link is to download the upgrade file?

  • There are no special requirements.  You will need to obtain the Configuration Manager media (1610) from your volume license site.  Then at that time just like Jason suggested, you backup, move to the latest SQL/Server and new hardware and restore your data.  You should be running perfectly and on Current Branch.  All updates will then come down through your console from now.
