Fill-in Choice adds to Drop-Down RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi - New here
I have a list of Projects and project info.  When the user can add or edit an item on the list - there is a Drop-Down Menu with Allow Fill-in Choice.  If the user enters a Fill-In choice, on submit, can I add it to the drop down list?  The drop down list was not populated by a database.

  • No I'm not experienced enough at programming for this to create an event listener.

What I did do was create a new list of the available choices.

In the main view - added a new column - lookup field - and pointed to that new choice list.

In the Quick Launch Bar I added a link pointing to the input page of the new choice list.  Called it "Add New Program Category"  -  Like in the bug tracker template.

  • Hi jslist,

i think a simple event handler will do the trick.

Override the itemadded and itemupdated events, check if the value of the drop down column is already in the drop down choices, add if necessary.

  • You could also use the SharePoint Web Services to add the value to the options.  Check out my library below.

  • Hi Frank,

I am trying to accomplish something similar as to add Fill-in choice values to drop down list.
Could you please ellaborate more on how could i accomplish this using event handlers or sharepoint WF's?
I would really appreciate your reply.

    Thanks.

  • I created a lookup column for my list and attached it to another list which has a single line of text column.
Also created a textbox "Specify your own value:" where user can enter values.
Those values will then be populated into the lookup field.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Leeza,

    There will be 2 lists:

In first list a column with single line of text. (list A)
In second list one column with lookup (from list A) and second column with single line of text.

If the value does not exist in lookup, the user will select (None) from drop-down field and enter the new value in textbox.

The WF would go like this:

    If lookupfield(value) contains (None)
     Create item in (list(A))
    then Update item in (list(B))

    Hope this helps!

Also if you can accomplish this, please let me know if you could do some validation on duplicate values being entered in the lookup field by user.
