    I want to put the Exchange 2016 server into maintenance mode before rebooting it. The first command is to Drain the mail queues on the server.  

    Set-ServerComponentState EX16-1 -Component HubTransport -State Draining -Requester Maintenance

    Question:  What does it mean by draining the mail queues.  What would this command do on server? I want to understand it practically (mean a high level overview), . Can some one explain please?

    Hi Asif,

    As far as I know, when you run this command to specifie the state "Draining" for the HubTransport component(by default should be Active), the hubtransport component will not transfer the messages in the queue on this server, all messages on this server will be in a pending delivery state, untill you redirect messages to another Mailbox server via running the following command:

    Redirect-Message -Server <ServerName> -Target <MailboxServerFQDN>
