Behavior of an app moved to the cloud by lift and shift RRS feed

  • Question

  • here is several options to move an app to the cloud. One of them is the lift and shift migration method.

For what I understood, when you move an app on the cloud using the lift and shift method, you simply move an on premise solution to the cloud. However, you do not leverage any technologies the cloud offer.

Apart from saving some time, some money and getting familiar with the cloud, what advantages there is to move an app to the cloud using lift and shift ?

Especially, can you use API with such apps ? or do have to set up everyting in a non automatic way ?.

Furthermore, are you restricted to use one server in the cloud provider data center ? or can you shift your app to another server if it crashes without having to go through the whole installation process ?.

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Best regards,

    Leonard

  • It all depends on your app and its dependencies. Do you need to lift and shift just the code or you are looking a VM in cloud the host your apps. Cloud gives you ability to scale your app on demand and ensure SLA for the high availability. If you host your web app in Paas, you simply upload your code to cloud and cloud providers look after rest. If you want to host on VM there, you can have multiple VMs to improve the availability and performance.
