Why does DPM fails to protect SQL 2000 DBs on 64 bit host? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a Server 2003 R2 64bit machine which hosts several SQL 2000 databases, and I have setup a SQL protection group auto protecting these databases as well as others hosted on a 32bit Win 2k3 R2 machine running SQL 2005. The 2005 databases work fine and DPM protects these according to the configured settings. What it does not do is protect the 2000 dbs. I am running SQL 2000 SP4 as recommended in various DPM manuals, I get the error "Replica is inconsistent" and running a consistency check does not improve things.

Here is the error in more detail:

    Affected area: servername\dbname
    Occurred since: 12/11/2010 20:21:24
Description: The replica of SQL Server 2000 database servername\dbname on servername.domain.local is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
     (0x800423F4))

Anything I can do to resolve as this is a mission crititcal db which I am now having to rely on SQL Manager to control the backups and would much prefer DPM to do this.

    Thanks in advance

Is the SQL writer started and in good state?
    SQL logs showing any errors?

  • Hi

I cannot start the SQL VSS Service from services (it isn't listed) I am using DPM 2010, the SQL server is awaiting updates from November but apart from that it is up to date.

The last rollup package installed on the DPM server was KB2250444
