Tape backup with multiple drives in library particularities. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good morning.

We have DPM 2012 R2 rollup 4 with 6 VTLs (Firestreamer VTL).  Each VTL has 5 drives.  Each protection group, when backing up to the VTL, has access to 2 drives.

Is it normal that DPM does not seem very smart when backing up to multiple drives?  If I only have one tape available, and it is in used in drive 1, it seems that DPM will still try to write to another tape in drive 2 and fail the backups that are being sent to that drive.  And this happens even if there would be plenty of space on the tape in drive 1 for those backups.

Also, it seems to sometime fight itself for tapes. I get data cyclic redundancy check errors when using multiple drives in a library.  I had to bring the number of drives back down to 2, from 5.

Is there any way to mitigate this?  I checked the update roll up change logs and it doesn't look like this was fixed.  I will, however, upgrade to update roll up 10 within the next month.

    Thank you
