  In addition to Prashobh'sm comments, there has also been a spate of recent articles in relation to branding and design over a NBSP.com by Mark Miller, SharePoint MVP.  The link is below.

  My comment on blogs are that although they can have great articles, they often do not provide an intro to branding. Blogs are a great place to find an answer to a specific issue or problem, as well as a resource to see what other people are doing. You know, learning how to do something you did not even think of doing.

  A great book on SharePoint Designer:
