Moving large files to an usb drive problem(W7 Pro x64) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi . I cannot move large files onto my USB stick. The file appears to transfer quickly then stops at 5 secs left for around 1-2mins before the K drive ( my usb drive) disappears from my PC.

If I eject then reattach the USB the drive is recognised and the files appear to be on the drive but are corrupted.

    Small files transfer without problem.

The usb drive works fine in my laptop with Win 7 Pro x64 installed. Also the PC can download files from the stick just not transfer them onto the stick.

This seems to be a comon problem so I tried the following.

    1. Uninstalled SP1 no help so reinstalled.
    2. Nvidia hotfix- -no help
    3. Safe mode- no help
    4. updated all drivers- no help

No sure how to post my system details but here is my Dxdiag with some of the long details removed.

  • Hi,

Have you tried to update your BIOS and chipset driver?

Also, Enter BIOS, go to “Advanced”->“USB Configuration”, make the USB 2.0 configuration enabled.

If this could not help, try to reinstall the USB controller driver. First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

    1. Click "Start", type "Device Manager" (without the quote) in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.

    2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

    3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

Meanwhile, you can download the following hotfix to see how it works:

You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM

If this issue persists, it would be related the hardware, you could also contact the manufacturer for further investigating.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hi,

I would like to suggest you try the following methods to check what the result is:

    1.    Please format the USB drive to NTFS.

Note: Please back up the files and data in the drive.

    2.    Check the disk surface for physical errors or bad sectors:

    1)   Connect your USB drive to your computer.

    2)   Open a command prompt in elevated privileges.

    3)   Run the following command:

        chkdsk [Drive letter] /f

If there are any bad sectors, please run the following command to locate bad sectors and recover readable information.

        chkdsk [Drive letter] /R

    3.    If you have another USB drive, check how it works on this computer.

    Hope it helps.

    Alex Zhao

  • Hi

Sorry but I saw that in another post and had already tried that answer.

Other USB sticks have the same problem transfering large files on this PC and this usb stick works fine on my laptop with large files.

Does changing the allocation unit size influence things? I have tried big and small with no sucess.

    Mark

  •  I changed the format to Fat 32, with 64kb allocation.

The 1GB file seemed to take ages but was working, after 2-3 mins the transfer bar went red and a message dialog popped up with title "Item not found"

and dialog "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in computer. Verify the item's location and try again.    Removable disk" The USB has disappered from My Computer". if i remove and plug back in it returns.

  • Thanks for your help.

    I undertook the above.

The USB ports on a PCI card  now work but the ports from the motherboard still fail. They consistantly fail with files >1 GB, less than 1 GB works fine.

  • Yes,

The other thing I've noticed is that my PCIE wireless card occ gets dropped from device manager and cannot be found until I restart my machine.

The chipset driver update is an "all-in-one- driver" so I presume that updates the southbridge controller also. I understand that is what controls the USB ports.
