Can I perform In-place OS upgrade on FIM 2010 R2 SP1 Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

We have recently successfully upgraded FIM 2010 to FIM 2010 R2 SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server.

Now I am planning to upgrade the Operating System to 2012 r2 SP1.

What I heard from few is to

    1)uninstall FIM first

    2)Upgrade to 2012 R2

    3) Reinstall FIM

Can i not perform an inplace upgrade of OS. Please help.

    Thanks and Regards,

    AK

No version of FIM  is supported on 2012 R2. That support won't be available
until MIM is released some time next year. If you want to be in a supported
state then the latest OS version you can upgrade to is 2012, not 2012 R2.

  • Download patch numbered 4.1.3599.0 - from https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2980295

Then install FIMSynchronizationService msp from downloaded package over you server.

Please make sure you have your database backed up before re-applying patch.

Please also make sure you have connectivity to your database from this server.

  • Thanks Paul.

But can I perform an in-place upgrade of OS to 2012 on FIM server and does the application work as it is supposed to after OS upgrade.

Else, do I have to uninstall FIM and reinstall after upgrade?

    Thanks.

An in-place upgrade of the OS to 2012 should work just fine. As always you should first test this in a non-production environment.

  • Hi,

We have tried the In-Place upgrade in the test machine and below is the error that I could find in the event viewer.

FIM Sync Service is in Running State.

Unable to Lauch the FIM SYNC Manager with an error that either Service is in stopped state or required Group Membership is not avialable.

    But both are validated.

The server encountered an unexpected error and stopped.

  • Hi Dominik,

Your suggestion worked like a charm. Million Thanks.

Actually it was also to do with permissions in Windows 2012 which was figured when trying to install the rollup patch and was encountered with a permission issue.

    http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/windows_server/disable-uac-server-2012.htm

Disabled UAC and was able to install the Roll Up patch and FIM Sync Manager now works.

    Thanks again.
