Outlook 2016. Clicking on "Junk Mail" folder, crashes outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am experiencing a weird issue. I have outlook 2016 with multiple accounts. One of them is Hotmail.

There is an email in junk folder, and if I click to open the folder, not the email, the outlook restarts.

Cant think of what is happening, besides a very sophisticated email virus, though it does not make technical sense.

I logged into my account online and I see the only email on junk folder is this

  • I had tried reinstalling and deleting folders and registries, without luck.

Finally an Office Update fixed the issue.

  • Hi Nosh Mernacaj,

Common causes for such a crash or freeze to happen is that there is a corruption in either the first message of that folder, the view of that folder is corrupted or there is a corruption in your data file.

Let’s check these one by one:

What if we delete the only email on this Junk Email folder (if the email isn’t important)? Can you open the Junk folder normally?

To see if there was a corrupted view, please exit Outlook, press Win key + R to open the Run command, type outlook.exe /cleanviews and then press Enter. This command switch will help reset view.

If none of these helps, there may be something wrong with your account data file. Please refer to the steps in this official article to recreate .ost file for this Hotmail account.

Any updates, please feel free to post back.

    Regards,

    Perry

  • Hi Perry,

Thanks for your detailed explanation. I emptied the folder and it crashed anyways.
I think the email had nothing to do and you are right on your assessment.

The command outlook.exe /cleanviews does not work however, cant recognize it. But I guess I can just recreate the account in Outlook.  I am glad it was not a Monster virus.

    Thanks again,

    Nosh

  • So I did everything and then some. I actually uninstalled Office. I deleted the Temp Folders, Outlook files, and everything with the word office on it. Installed again, and sure the same issue. Weird thing, though, when I installed again, all email accounts were already configured. Where is it getting that info from?
