SfB on premise - federation with MS Teams RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

i found many contradictory information online describing how SfB onprem collaborates with MS Teams. Some articles claim that this kind of federation is possible:

    https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-Teams-AMA/SfB-on-prem-to-Teams-Questions/td-p/300470

while others are saying completely different thing:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftTeams/comments/9lmzdg/teams_interop_with_skype_for_business_onprem/

Can you please provide some kind of official statement about this? Is it possible to communicate with MS Teams user if I am homed on on premise Skype for Business?

    Thank you,

    Tomas

  • Hi Tomas,

It is not supported to do the federation between Teams and pure SFB on-premise for now. If you want to do this, you need to configure hybrid environment at first, then move user to SFB online and do the federation between SFB online and Teams.

Here is the official document show this you could refer to: Coexistence with Skype for Business.

According to the document, whether the conversation is possible:

    • In-tenant interoperability requires that the tenant is either pure online or Skype for Business hybrid. Purely on-premise tenants can't have in-tenant interoperability.
    • Cross-tenant federation always requires proper Skype for Business federation configuration as well as proper Teams federation configuration from both tenants. Skype for Business hybrid is not required of either tenant.
    • If the Skype for Business account of the originator is homed on-premise, that user can't use the Teams client for in-tenant interoperability or for federation. That user can only use the Skype for Business client for interoperability and federation.
    • Teams to Teams communication is always possible in-tenant.

Currently, all federation involving Teams leverages the Skype for Business federation pipeline as well as Teams – Skype for Business interoperability. We are planning native Teams – Teams federation. The present document will be updated upon release of native federation.
