Can't get into Safe Mode (XP SP3) RRS feed

  • Question

  • My PC is down since installing a new ASUS graphics card (blue-screens or hangs before Desktop finishes loading).  I'm trying to get into Safe Mode but it just keeps booting normally no matter how many times I pound on F8.  (I don't know if it was always like this because I probably never needed Safe Mode on this machine before.)

What am I up against here?  Do I throw the HDD and graphics card away and start over?

(Nb. Gigabyte motherboard, Intel Core2Quad;  other specs are in a text file on the Desktop -- which I can't get to!)

    Thanks!

  • This can be because you have a USB keyboard connected, that's not recognized by your motherboard. I experienced that a while back with an older PC.

If you have a PS2 keyboard and a place to plug it in, try that instead, and there should be a good chance it'll see your F8 command.

  • Thanks, Ole.

That sounds like the culprit. I'll see if I do have a PS2 socket.

  • No problem.

Let me know if it worked or not.
