How do i reset my farm passphrase when I have it forgotten ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys

I have disconnected my sharepoint central administration from the current farm configuration and when I run the configuration wizard and I want to join that existing farm once again I have to provide the passphrase I have entered during the very first installation.

but I don't remember the pass phrase . what are my options to have my farm back ?

  • There is currently no option to retrieve the existing farm passphrase.
    • Must be a member of the SharePoint_Shell_Access database role on the SharePoint Configuration database. Check Get-SPShellAdmin and Add-SPShellAdmin.
    • Open the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell (Start > All Programs > Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products > SharePoint 2010 Management Shell)
    • Enter this at the PowerShell prompt:
      • $passphrase = ConvertTo-SecureString -asPlainText -Force
    • Input the new passphrase and hit Enter
    • Enter this at the PowerShell prompt:
      • Set-SPPassPhrase -PassPhrase $passphrase -Confirm
    • You will be asked to confirm the passphrase by re-entering it
    • Re-enter the passphrase and hit Enter
    • You will be asked if you are sure that you want to perform this action, type Y (for Yes) and hit Enter
    • Your farm passphrase has now been reset!

  • Your post was helpful Rahul but that was not my answer.

Even when I want to uninstall sharepoint server and install it again it says that you have to provide the Farm Database for unistallation but again I cannot run the sharepoint configuration to provide the farm database becase I don't have the passphrase.

    Any Idea ?

  • Hi Pouyan.

I guess that I'm in the same situation as you are or were.

The answer above isn't what we need. Did you find any way of solving the problem?

  • I hope this isn't rude but I don't recall using a Farm password for 2007, only 2010. Does this belong in the 2010 Admin Forum? If so, might have more luck there.
