Exchange Hybrid deinstall Exchange Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Performed several migrations in the past using a 3rd party tool, this time the mailboxes are migrated using a hybrid configuration. The migration itself went perfectly, the next step is to uninstall the on-premise Exchange servers.
All mailboxes that are migrated are now remote mailboxes, the question is: what will happen if Exchange is deinstalled? Will it remove the values for the attributes smtpproxyaddress, emailadres, x400? or will it leave those in place?

Please no discussion that removing the Exchange server is a bad idea, well aware of consequences.

Answers

  • Nothing is removed, You just lose the management piece which could be done using ADSIEDIT which is unsupported of-course.

  • Hi Bruun,

Agree with Fazal. Decommission the on-premise Exchange servers will not remove anything in cloud mailbox, however, as most of the attributes cannot be managed from Exchange Online and must be managed from on-premises, if you decommission the on-premise Exchange servers, you will discover that you can no longer manage your cloud mailboxes.
