Skype for Business cumulative update RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Looking for a suggestion about cumulative update process which needs to be installed.

We are in process of migrating Lync Services from Lync 2013 to Skype for Business Server(Side by Side Migration method) Enterprise edition.Skype for Business server have been installed in co-existence with Lync 2013 Server in single Topology role lies with Lync 2013 Server.

Please suggest how can we install latest Skype for Business CU so that server has all updates before we migrate any production user. Do we need to run any command to update CMS in entire process ?

  • Hi,

In the link below when update Lync Server 2013, below is a description for the scenario Lync Server 2010 coexistence with Lync Server 2013:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2809243

"In a coexistence environment that contains both Lync Server 2010 and Lync Server 2013 and in which the Central Management Service is located on a Lync Server 2010 pool, do not run the Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase command. If you later move the Central Management Service to a Lync Server 2013 pool, you have to run the Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase command to apply the changes."

In your case, it is Lync Server 2013 coexistence with SFB Server 2015, base on my understanding, it should be similar with the environment Which Lync Server 2010 coexistence with Lync Server 2013.

    Best Regards

  • I typically following the guide provided with the release e.g. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3061064

There should be not issue doing this while in a co-existence state.

  • While doing CU update, do we need to run any command to update CMS database ,which is with Lync 2013 front End Pool at present ?

We like to update only Skype for Business Servers, not Lync 2013 Servers. At present Lync 2013 Servers are being used for Production users. If we update SFB Servers, will it be any impact on Lync 2013 services as CMS is lying there ?

  • Before you migrate to SfB, updates must be applied to your Lync Server 2013 environment (see kb2809243 link below for complete steps). Then follow Andrews reference to kb3061064.

  • We do not want to update Lync 2013 Servers as they are managed by some other vendor, we have control on SFB Servers only and that is the reason we did not update these servers yet.Current SFB version is 6.0.9319.0.

Our plan is to move CMS after we migrate all users into SFB Pool and that is the reason we want to confirm if CMS update will be required during CU update.

Please suggest how should we approach so that Lync 2013 services not interrupt if we update SFB servers.

  • Hi,

It is recommended to apply the update to Lync 2013 environment first in order to avoid some unknown issues.

And when you install Skype for Business 2015 CU, you don’t need to run a command to update CMS database

  • Hi,

At present Lync 2013 is updated with CU 5.0.8308.872 which is the minimum requirement to deploy Skype for Business Severs in co-existence.We can not update Lync 2013 servers as I said they are managed by some other vendor.

We were just curious to know if update process will update CMS also or not.If yes, will it be fine if it resides at Lync 2013 server.

  • This is feb 2015 Update for Lync 2013 , after this even though there is lot of CU update that has been released but for the backend database versions  could only see the LCSCDR database version having a slight upgrade but other components are the same , can check that  here

  • As we have already CU 5.0.8308.872 on Lync Server 2013 and it is going to be decommission once we migrate all users into SFB Servers. Our plan is to update only SFB Servers with CU4 before we migrate production users into SFB Pool.

We were not sure about CMS database(resides with Lync 2013 pool at present) updation while will do update for SFB Servers and as confirmed by Eason, there will not be any requirement to update CMS database during CU Update.
