server manager crashing RRS feed

  • Question

  • We had updated quickbooks and installed a windows .net frame of 4.7. Server manager then was crashing. We have uninstalled quickbooks and removed all updates since that previous date. Server manager still continues to crash. This is the CLR20r3 error we are getting. How does this get resolved?

  • You might try clearing out the cache

or try logging on as another user in case of profile corruption or also check system and servicing health

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

  • I have the same issue on multiple systems following the June 2017 roll-up.

Application Event Logs point to a COM exception, traced back through NET PresentationCore components.  To that end, I tried the following (in this order) to fix and/or undo the updates that cause ServerManager to crash.  Each of these failed to solve the problem:

    • Clean up the MMC cache (see above)
    • SFC /SCANNOW ... reports the system is in good health
    • Repair/Uninstall .NET 4.7
    • Repair/Uninstall .NET 4.6.2, 4.6.1, etc.

Summary:  After multiple scans, uninstalls, reboots, etc., the problem remains unsolved.

  • Hi,

im in the same situation as P. Deaver.

after june patches, servermanager (and other application) stopped working. same behaviour as explained.

  • Just to say we're also having the exact same problem.

Server Manager crashes on opening - same crash details as OP.

    Also affecting backup software, Veeam.

No problem when using vSphere Console.

Seems to only be an issue when remote connecting using RDP from a Surface Pro!!?

  •  was also able to notice 2 strange things.

1 - when i open mstsc to rdp into the server with my computer :

surface pro 2 , windows 8.1pro to the windows 2012 rr. When i log as local admin or with domain admin credentials, the server manager instantly crashes with the previous comments.

when i log into that server using rdp from a windows 7 pro sp1 to that server, as local admin or domain admin, server manager starts normally.

2 - when my session is running servermanager normally, i asked one of my collegue to shadow my session. Servermanagers crashes.

  • We were able to fix this issue based off the findings in this post:

Not ideal as it requires a restart however it has fixed the Servers 100% of the time.

  • Hi,

    couple of updates :

1 - thanks Rodsawhite for your link,

    i followed thses steps : https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2d5bef13-3e0e-4efe-83f8-8898cf15e43f/windows-2012-r2-servermanager-crashes-runtime-unhandle-exception?forum=winserver8gen

    the same that you mentionned.

i uninstalled KB3186539, i can clearly see that the optionnal update KB3186539 is now avaialble , so i will not install it.

i re installed the manual version of that patch : NDP47-KB3186497-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU (not the same KB id ?), then i restarted the server.

im still facing the crash of servermanager.

2 - i can open server manager from a windows7 pro computer, when my coworker shadow my session, it crashes again with same error at stated before.

  • Hi,

just to let you know that i re-install from scratch. None of the suggested solutions fix my issue.

  • I manually uninstalled KB3186539 and downloaded the offline .NET 4.7 Installer. After installing the update my issue was resolved. Thank you! Also my PowerShell ISE is opening with no issues. Again Thank you all!

  • I just had to uninstall .NET Framework 3.5 Features, which also fixed an issue I was having when trying to install IIS features (Server manager kept failing, indicating it needed a reboot, even though it appeared IIS was actually installed but was not showing up in the features as installed).

  • Today I started Servermanager on all of our 26 Hyper-V Nodes and you can´t belive it, everythings works fine!

So I guess, If there are many Servers delivering lots of serivce states and event states in the "All Servers" Group in ServerManager, they produce this ugly .net error above. As I said, I didn´t change anything since Friday, August 23, 2019 1:26 PM, and today everthing (concerning ServerManager) looks good !??!

  • Reinstalling 4.7.2 fixed the issue for me also.
