MOSS 2007 - Content Reorganization RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings,

We are in a process to consolidate content from Shared Drives and other SharePoint sites (MOSS 2007) onto a single SharePoint (MOSS again) site. In this activity we are not only looking at content consolidation but for obvious reasons, content audit and tagging as well. The size of content is significant and manual audit is a remote possibility looking at availability of the team members. The metadata considerations are almost finalized.

With that background, I am looking for a tool which would automate this process or parts of this process. Per my research the product MetaVis Classifier seems like one of the best contenders. It helps you bulk classify the documents and then assign/change metadata in place. What I was hoping for was the following functionality -

    a. Connect to SharePoint sites and Shared Drives

    b. User would input the Metadata tags

    c. The tool crawls through the conten sources and creates an inventory report of documents, existing location and to be location based on tags provided

    d. User then selects which of the documents to be migrated OR metadata tags to be refined.

Question: Could someone please guide me to material on internet that targets this to the closest possible? I am more interested in the report / summary before the actual migration starts.

    Regards,

    Amol.

  • Hi Amol,

Like your research, the commercial classifier product is one of the best contenders to reorganize the content, and I didn’t find other good tools to achieve your targets.

About the metadata tags in SharePoint site, you can add them via SharePoint Designer or delegate control (here is a relevant article).

As far as I know there is no such a tool that could crawl and create an inventory report. You can use Object Model to code with Visual Studio and list all site contents.
And you can check all site contents via SharePoint Manager, but can’t get a summary report.

    Thanks,
    Daniel
