SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard - Failed to register SharePoint services RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm trying to install Poject Server 2007 in a Windows 2008 Server (for tests) that already had Project Server 2007 installed some time ago, but it was removed.

Now, on this new Project Server 2007 re-instalation, the install process ends OK.

The problem happen executing "SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard". It stops on step 5, with the following error:

    Failed to register SharePoint services.

An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown. Additional exception information: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'.

    Part of the log:

    09/15/2011 12:20:53  9  INF                  Calling SPServiceInstance.Provision for instance Microsoft.Office.Project.Server.Administration.ProjectEventServiceInstance, service Microsoft.Office.Project.Server.Administration.ProjectEventService

09/15/2011 12:21:23  9  ERR                  Task services has failed with an unknown exception

09/15/2011 12:21:23  9  ERR                  Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

I tried several types of solutions researching on internet, but none worked.

The service "Microsoft Office Project Server Events Service" (on Windows services) doesn't start even manually.

    Some idea?

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

    This problem might be related to the previous installation, some I would check the service configuration;

    1. From Server Manager - Configuration - Services, locate the Project Server Event service and ensure that the logon account used is the correct one.

    2. Another common issue that affected Project Server 2007 was the service timeout, see the following blog about changing a registry setting to fix this: http://projectserverblogs.com/?p=3442

  • Hi,

Hope you are aware that Project Server 2007 is not compatible with windows server 2008, updated version is required. Updated versions of Project Server 2007, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, and Office SharePoint Server 2007 include Service Pack 1, Infrastructure Updates, Cumulative Updates, and Service Pack 2.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc531331(office.12).aspx

so you can try two things:

first, do not run the configuration wizard after installing the binaries - install SP2 or the latest SP available for PS2007 first and then run the configuraion wizard. this hopefully will resolve your issue.

Second option is: Add server roles, follow the below steps:

    1. Navigate to the Server Manager in Windows Server 2008, and then click Roles.

    2. Click Add Roles and select the Application Server and Web Server (IIS) roles.

    3. When prompted in the Add Roles Wizard to Add features required for Application Server, click Add Required Features, and then click Next to continue in the Add Roles Wizard dialog box.

    4. In the Add Roles Wizard – Select Role Services dialog box, select Web Server (IIS) Support, and verify that the Application Server Foundation box is selected.

    5. Click Next to begin the installation process

    hope this helps.

  • Mr. Khurram, thank you for the reply.

Yes, I read this two solutions on the web, but didn't work.

    a) About the softwares updates:

I installed the Project Server 2007, and before run the configuration wizard I ran Windows Update. Windows Update installed all updates you mentioned, but, when I ran the configuration wizard, the same error occured.

    b) About the server roles:

When I open Server Manager an click at Roles and Add Roles, the options:

    - Application Server (Installed)

    - File Services (Installed)

    - Web Server (IIS) (Installed)

    This options are already selected and I can not select or deselect, and the button "Next" are not "visible" to click. I can only click on "Next" button if I mark anothe option like DHCP Server, for exemple;

    Some idea?

    Thank you.

  • Mr. Martin,

The solution number 2 (changing a registry setting) solved my problem.

    Thank you very much.
