how long will it take for MOVE a 2 TB VM from one drive to another drive on the same hyper-v 2012 RTM? and can we do a live move?

    Question

  • how long will it take for MOVE a 2 TB VM from one drive to another drive on  the same hyper-v 2012 RTM?

and can we do a live move or do have to shut down the VM before we move it.  Note- we want to do a storage move (move only vhd for the applications only.  No OS vhd will be moved.)

We know a 2012 R2 can do a live move but can a 2012 RTM do a live move??

  • Highly dependent upon your configuration.  You do not give any information about your configuration.

Some storage vendors have the ability to perform a move a file from one physical volume to another in a very short period of time.  Using this ability of a SAN provider would take a few seconds of downtime of the VM while you changed the settings to point to the new location.

If your SAN vendor does not have that ability, then you can use live storage migration. This takes time, but it again dependent upon the speed of transfer that the storage is capable of doing as well as the overall load on the system.

  • Is live MOVE available for Windows 2012 RTM?  NOT R2.

  • Storage Migration was introduced in Hyper-V 2012.
