DPM 2010 and HP MSL6030 Tape Library RRS feed

    Ive just recently installed DPM 2010 to work with my HP MSL6030 Tape library. DPM recongnises the library and the two LTO3 drives and it will do a backup. However if i need to run a backup that needs to go over more than one tape, it will fail. It will backup to the first tape fine and move on to the second tape but after about a minute it fails with the error:

    The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The physical end of the tape has been reached (0x8007044C))

     

    DPM is installed on a 2008R2 server which is connected to the Tape library by Fiber. I have made sure the latest drivers are installed and im desperate to get this working.

  • OK - that showed basic compatibility with DPM was fine.  The problem only occurs when spanning tapes and that tool does not test that, so to make further progress, we would need to look at the logs.  Please open a support case with us so we can dig deeper.

  • Hi,

    Other customer using the HP MSL6030 have reported similar problems.  See the folllowing.  One user said they resolved it by updating the drivers.  Note this is an OLD post and was when the customer was running Windows 2003, but in any case, I don't believe this to be a DPM problem.

    I was able to resolve this issue by downloading latest driver available for
    Dell TL2000 library from IBM, since dell uses IBM libraries. Latest driver
    version on dell is 6.1.8.X and Latest driver on IBM site is 6.1.9.7.
    
    Procedure I followed:
    1) uninstall any driver that you have installed for drive and library and
    reboot
    2) Download Driver from
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/Windows/Win2003/Latest/
    3) Exctract the Driver
    4) run install_nonexclusive.exe -t -d and accept the non windows certified
    driver warning. wait for driver to install completly.
    5) run install_nonexclusive.exe -c -d and accept the non windows certified
    driver warning. wait for driver to install completly.
    6) Reboot and re-run the job again and it should work

  • Ive uninstalled the current drivers an reinstalled them so i will see how this goes. I think ive exhasted all avenues with reg changes etc so im almost at a loss.

  • It didnt work. Im now trying the MSL G3 Tape Library driver just to see if that makes a difference!

  • OK - that showed basic compatibility with DPM was fine.  The problem only occurs when spanning tapes and that tool does not test that, so to make further progress, we would need to look at the logs.  Please open a support case with us so we can dig deeper.

  • Interestingly, it looks like one of the other protection groups that backs up to tape that needs to span more than one tape has worked!

    I've checked the long term backup settings and the one that seems to have worked has the same settings as the ones that dont.
