Hi,
Please first run the Apps troubleshooter, check if it can fix this error.
If this issue only occurred recently, please check if you have made some changes of the system, revert back for a test
For People app, have you tried to switch to another account to test this issue?
Here is a solution posted by MASTERDENG, check if it fits this issue

this is a recurring problem that I, and others have fighting with. Changing to another profiles is a work around, not a solution. running app troubleshooters made things worse. The only solution seems to be to wipe the system and reinstall. I
need microsoft to solve this problem, not to provide work arounds.

Hi,
Many factors can cause this issue and we're trying to find a culprit to improve the performance of metro apps.
So this issue only occured in a particular profile, check the permission of the file system of the apps as described in the following blog, meanwhile, check other causes in the blog.
What to do if your Windows 8 Modern App fails to start
Or re-register the Store App with the CMD below:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML
See this blog

Thanks Roger
None of the links you provide did help windows 8 to open apps, but the link https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=12&checkda=1&ct=1391946431&rver=6.2.6289.0&wp=LBI&wreply=http%3a%2f%2fwww.microsofttranslator.com%2fajax%2fv2%2fauth.aspx%3fpru%3dhttp%3a%2f%2fsupport.microsoft.com%2fdefault.aspx%2fkb%2f2778122%2fnl&lc=1043&id=288908
sounds intriguing. Alas, it doesn't open.

Hi,
The link you posted opened fine for me, here's the URL of the page it opened: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2778122
Can you try running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated command prompt to see if there is any corruption that SFC didn't find?
Hope this helps,
David

sfc /scannow didn't find anything.
When I open the link I'm redirected to

It looks like you have a virus.

I think I know what is going on
The translation service of Microsoft is broken. It attempts to display the website in dutch (for what ever reasons) and the web developers in Redmond didn't think of the SSL implications of that. Could some of you Microsoft guys run over to the Webguys and tellem that? That would be swell! It would be even more swell if the translation service, which is not very impressive in the first place, could be switched off.

theking2,
If you sign out of the TechNet forums and then follow the link, does it work then? This is usually caused by your system time/date being wrong.
Hope this helps,
David

Running the Apps troubleshooter fixed the problem for me. I ran it twice and rebooted. During the reboot it mentioned applying 7 updates (all security/critical updates were previously applied, so there was none in the reboot queue).
