Win7 64 updating issue (KB979538, error code 80070005 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Almost all of the Windows updates that have arrived since Oct 15 2010 have failed to install, with a 0x800f0826 error code.  Researching this problem I understand some previous upgrade has failed, and that's causing a problem with newer upgrades.  On 10/15/2010 35 updates were attempted, and 15 failed.  All of the failed updates had error code 0x800f0826 except one.  This was an update to the USB (KB979538) that died with an error code of 80070005.  My USB port is erratic and sometimes crashes the computer when cables are connected so I'd like this update (and all the following ones too...).  What is preventing KB979538 from working?

  • Generally, error code 80070005 indicates that you do not have correct permission to install updates.

To troubleshoot this kind of issue, I would like to propose the following suggestions.

    1.     Confirm that you are logon with administrator privileges.

    2.     Temporally turn off your security software such as anti-virus, malware/spyware protection to see if these software are conflicting with the update installer.

    3.     Microsoft has released related KB for troubleshooting this error code, it can be used in Windows Vista the same as used in Windows XP,  I would like to share this site with you.
