is it necessary to run preparetomove with mergecontentdbs in same farm?

Hi,

I am trying to split 500 GB Content file into 10 separate files using mergecontentdb command within same farm.

Do I need to run preparetomove command before running mergecontentdb and what will be the problems if I will not run preparetomove command.

after running mergecontentdb command (10 times) I want to delete the old content database file. will it effect on user permissions or data?

hi Amjad,

I am assuming you are running SharePoint 2007? As long as you are running version 12.0.0.6318 or greater (hopefully you are running service pack 3 or greater) then you do not need to run preparetomove prior to the mergecontentdb. PreparetoMove sets the profile sync to OFF. After the IU Infrastructure Update it was no longer necessary run this command. However, after you have moved site collections into different contendbs you want to ensure they are being synced by the profile service, so you want to run preparetomove after the mergecontentdb with the -undo parameter to ensure syncing continues.
