Configuration Manager 2012 RTM Migration to SP1 CU3 or R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Pros,

I am planning to upgrade my current site (2012 RTM) to either SP1 CU3 or if possible to R2.

    My Questions are :

    i) Can I upgrate my Current site directly to 2012 SP1 CU3 or do i need to upgrade to SP1 -> SP1 CU1 - >SP1 CU2 -> SP1 CU3.

We are starting to have some Windows 8.1 clients and Server 2012 R2 on our network. Thus the requirement for SCCM to support those OSes.

ii) Is it possible to upgrade from 2012 RTM to R2 Directly or do i need to hop from SP1 to R2

    Kind Regards,

  • 1. You can upgrade your 2012 RTM site to 2012 SP1. Then you can apply a CU. They are cumulative so you only need to apply the last one (CU3).

Note there is a post-CU3 update available also

    CU4 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2922875/en-us

    2. You cannot upgrade directly to R2. You need SP1 first. Note that you do not need to apply a CU to SP1 to be eligible to upgrade to R2 (although you probably should as R2 does not contain all the updates and hotfixes).

  • Hi,

    1. Yes, you can go directly from 2012 Sp1 -> SP1 CU3, CU4 is actually released as well, and there is no need to install CU1, CU2 before as the are Cumulative.

    2. You need to upgrade to SP1 before you upgrade to R2.

  • Actually, there's no advantage whatsoever (unless you are using multi-casting but there's a simple work-around by just disabling and re-enbling it) to applying CU3 or CU4 before installing R2. R2 is essentially a separate branch of code now and installing it uninstalls/overwrites the previous bits.

  • Thanks everyone for the fast replies :)

I am upgrading tomorrow so i am stressing a bit. That was one aspect i was not sure about.

I think ill stick with the SP1 CU4.

    Thanks again.

  • You mean and not do R2? There are a handful of very nice things you will be missing out on. Why would you not go to R2 if you are licensed for it?

  • It's expected that a replication link fails after installing R2, but it should recover itself automatically.
Make sure that the replication is up and running before you proceed upgrading to R2. See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/minfangl/archive/2012/05/16/tips-for-troubleshooting-sc-2012-configuration-manager-data-replication-service-drs.aspx
