Services stopping or not starting RRS feed

  • Question

  • The services for Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Modules Installer stop running (without notice) and the Windows Server Essentials Email Service will not start at all (with the error message "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly").

Regular manual restarts of Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Modules Installer are required.

    Troubleshooting ideas?

  • hi,

I clean install WSE2016 my lab, only configured client backup and not installed any update patch.
wse email service default status type "disable" and service state "stop", when I want to start wse email service ,it stop as Error 1067 like picture2

about  vss service stop automatically when there is no backup action ,it very strange .
can we use below method to solve it temporarily.
enter net start vss in txt file and save it as "vss.bat" set the task scheduler to auto start vss service  every 1 hour like picture 3

  • Hello,

    1) In the backup log files, there are several scattered instances of the word "fail" through the thousands of entries but there is no instance of "vss" or "shadow" or"copy" in the logs.

    2) In the Application events log, there are several "information" events logged each day for "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout. " but no warnings or errors. And no VSS events in the System or Setup event logs.

    3) I don't recall any particular change that corresponded to the onset of the problem.

    Thank you.

  • Again the error: "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout. "

What could cause this when it's set to Automatic and "restart."

  • SFC reports "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

DSIM 1st option reports "No component store corruption detected. The operation completed successfully."

    Other options to follow

    Tuesday, April 9, 2019 4:59 PM
  • DSIM 2nd and 3rd options report "No component store corruption detected. The operation completed successfully."
    and
"The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully."

"vssadmin list writersproduced a list of writers with "No error" for each.

The server backup is handled by a cloud-based service instead of the Essentials backup. The client backups are done to the server's disks which have over 200GB of free space, each.

The timeout errors occur outside of the scheduled client backup period.

I will look at the troubleshooting document.

    Thank you.

  • The services for Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Modules Installer were again not running this morning. The Windows Server Essentials Email Service still fails to start.

I am unaware of any relationship between these services.

How can I further investigate the issue?

  • The last update installation was 3/11, and there are 4 updates installed but pending reboot. The reboot will happen this weekend.
I will follow the steps in 2 thru 5 also this weekend. The server is currently providing resources. I will let you know.

    Thank you.

    Friday, April 12, 2019 4:42 PM
  • On the first part of step 2, "net stop wuauserv," the service would not stop and entered a "Stopping" state. Continuing on, the rest of the step was completed, but upon rebooting, the VSS again stopped (nearly immediately) and was manually restarted, and the WSE Email service would not start.
The Windows Module installer is now set to Startup Type Manual and is Running.

What could cause the wuauserv service to hang on "Stopping"? Is this related to the other issues?

    Thank you.

  • After the previous update, I was able to perform the "net" command sequence originally described without getting stuck at stopping. The reboot also installed another Windows update.

I will check on the Module Installer and VSS services tomorrow to see if they remain running.

The WSE Email service would still not start, so would the Process Monitor be of use in troubleshooting it's stopping?

    Thank you.

This morning the Windows Modules Installer was running, but the VSS and WSE Email services were not running again.

  • 1 No, the users have O365 email with different accounts from their windows login. The server has its backup sent to a non-Azure cloud service, and the domain devices are backed up by the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard.

2 The WSE Email service is always stopped immediately after an attempt to start it.

3 - 8 I saved a .pml file (see examples of entries found regarding "Email" below.) I hope this may be helpful.

10 There is a 7034 error "The Windows Server Essentials Email Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s)."

  • The VSS service was again stopped this morning but the Windows Module Installer has remained running. The WSE Email service still terminates unexpectedly.

    Thursday, April 18, 2019 1:59 PM
  • Since the WSE Email service hasn't run for several weeks, what should it have been doing that is now missing from the server? In other words, what is it's function and can it be safely done without? It seems like this involves the integration of AD and Office 365, but I haven't been able to confirm this, and the integration is not being done on this server with user login accounts for the domain being different from their email/Office addresses.

The constant spontaneous stopping of the VSS service is an annoyance that still needs to be addressed. Using the process monitor to find what causes the VSS to stop seems unlikely because a period of hours seems to elapse before the service stops after having been manually started.

    Further ideas will be appreciated.

    Thank you.
