Journaling users in a database using Exchange 2010 standard license.

    Question

  • I have a journaling setup for compliance reasons and connected to 1 database.  All users in this database have all their e-mail sent using this journaling rule and another one for the entire company.

Here's my issue:  I now have 3 users that are in different databases using this journaling rule.  2 of them used to be in there but have been moved out.  The other one to the best of my knowledge has never been in this database.  Any ideas on why this is happening or how to stop it?

    Thanks,

    Tom

  • Hi,

According to your post, I am not still sure of your question.

I understand you had set a journal rule in your environment.

Then you found 2 users have been moved out from the group as the journaling recipients.

And one user was added into the group unexpectly.

Please confirm if I understand your question correctly.

    Regards,

    David

  • HI David, I have a journaling rule named compliance in my environment that is attached to 1 database (enterprise standard license).  Every user in this database sends all email using this rule.  I have 3 users in different databases that when they send mail it shows them using this rule and they should not be, they should be using the company rule assigned to everyone.

    Hope this explains it better.

  • Verify that that DB is not configured for Journaling with 3 users.

Get-MailboxDatabase "DB Name" | fl Name, JournalRecipient

You can also try the below command to see if this fix the issue.

    Get-MailboxDatabase | Clean-MailboxDatabase

  • I did the journalrecipient one and could see the database but not the users.  I then ran Get-mailboxstatistics -database name and it shows these users as part of the database but the EMC show they are in a different database.

Would the clean-mailboxdatabase command fix this? can this be done during production hours?

  • Yes you can run clean-database in production also. there is no impact. but then also you should try in less load on server time. After above comments from you, it will be solved by this.

  • I think I got it, I ran PowerShell and it showed that all 3 accounts where soft deleted in the database.  I then ran the below PowerShell command.   This seems to have completely disconnected them from the database.  I'm still working on how to view who's using this journaling rule without waiting for a weekly report.

    Get-MailboxStatistics –Database dbname | where {$_.DisconnectReason –eq "SoftDeleted"} | foreach {Remove-StoreMailbox –Database $_.database –Identity $_.mailboxguid –MailboxState SoftDeleted}
