KB4056897 - Computers are not rebooting now

    Question

  • Hello,

We have noticed that since installing KB4056897 on our Acer M4618G desktop's, when we tell the machine to reboot, the computer shuts down gracefully, but never comes back up. The tower shows a solid blue power light, w/ no activity.

You have to hold the power button in and power the machine off and back on to get it to boot into windows.

If you reboot and hold the shift key down, the machine reboots with no issues.

Once again, we have narrowed this issue down to KB4056897 by uninstalling the updates and trying to re-create the issue.

This is happening on about 10 different Acer m4618G desktops running windows 7 x64.

Event viewer shows no errors in regards to a power issue or system.

    Acer

    Veriton M4618G

    4 GB

    4-Core 3 GHz Intel Core i5-2320 CPU @ 3.00GHz

    Please advise.

  • Seems a known issue and there is hotfix:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4073576/unbootable-state-for-amd-devices-windows-8-1-windows-server-2012-r2

Although it said the unbootable issue may occur on the AMD device, but Intel device are also affected. Make sure that you have installed the latest hotfix.

    Thanks for understanding.

That KB you linked me to does not have a version for Windows 7x64.

  • This patched fixed the issue temporarily.

The issue has come back on multiple Acer m4618gsx64 machines.

  • I think this affects some intel devices too... some of our Dell I5 machines suffer this also... I'm just putting it down to the windows updates that are being deployed due to spectre and meltdown etc... will wait for something more robust from the manufacturers...

  • Hi,

Today while doing windows patch update for one of the Intel Server, an unbootable issue was occurred due to  KB4056897 and we have rollbacked this update.Strongly recommend ignoring this (KB4056897) for Intel servers also.
