    Compatibility is an irrelevant question.

    WSUS is a SERVER ROLE.

    Windows Server 2012 R2 installs WSUS v6.3

Windows Server 2012 installs WSUS v6.2

    Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 install WSUS v3.2

WSUS v3.2 can also be installed, via the standalone installer, on a Windows Server 2003 SP2 system.

  • If you want to update your 2012 Servers (and Windows 8 Clients) from your WSUS3 you need to install at least KB2734608 -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2734608.

Good read, Olaf! I didn't see the question in that context, but now that I've reread it, I do believe that was what was being asked.
