cannot log on using domain user accounts RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, Recently upgraded from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro. Connected the computer to the domain however, I cannot log on using a domain users account, I can only log on using a local accounts.   We have other Windows 10 computers within the company which connect perfectly. Must have something to do with the upgrade. Any suggestions as to what I can try?

  • Hi,

    Please try the following steps:
Log on locally, and remove the computer from the domain.  Go to AD and reset the computer account.  Restart client and rejoin to domain.

    Best regards

  • Thanks for your response.  I have follow the above procedure and all goes until I get to the login. It says DOMAIN\USER NAME (the one I used to connect to the domain) but when I enter the password it still says user name or password is incorrect. Can still only log in as local user.

  • Hi,

Have you tried different domain account? Are there any related error messages recorded in the Event Viewer(Windows Logs\System, Security)?

    1. Run gpedit.msc.
    2. Expand Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies
    3. Click on User Rights Assignment
    4. Ensure that "Allow log on locally" includes Administrators, Backup
    Operators, Domain Users or Users

Disable the antivirus software installed on the machine.

    Best regards

  • There is a known issue where domain logons from domain joined RS1 Pro computers upgraded from home edition fail with the on-screen error "the user name or password is incorrect" after entering a valid password.

Is that a match for your computer? Can the same account logon from Win10 computers that installed Win10 Pro directly?

If so, a fix is said to be coming at the end of this month.
Microsoft support is aware of a workaround where you edit the registry as a workaround until then.

  • Thanks for that, this does match my computer and the users can log in on other Win10 computers. I will ty and find the registry workaround until the fix comes through
