    As the title asks, How can I reinstall IE 8 for windows 7 ?

    I am having the issue where "Open in new tab" or "open in new window" does not work.....

    Anyone know of a fix for it? Or how to reinstall IE 8 as it WAS working when i initially installed windows 7.

    Update....

    I found that if you make a shortcut to IE 8 on your desktop, right click the shortcut and select "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" itll open your browser and then "Open new tab" and "open in new window" issue resolved.

    NOTE, any browser shortcuts you already have made or MAKE, for example dragging the title bar to your desktop to make a shortcut to a webpage, will open in the OLD browser link and therefore open in new tab and open in new window will not work.

    Hope this helps...

    Oh yea...You can then UNPIN IE 8 from the taskbar...then right click the shortcut on desk and select PIN TO TASKBAR, in essence replacing the non working shortcut etc.


    Sure hope they release a fix soon....

    Go to Control Panel\Programs and Features\Turn Windows features on or off. Uncheck Internet Explorer 8, click OK and reboot. You will be not have Internet Explorer installed then. Go to Windows features again and check Internet Explorer 8, reboot. Now you will have Internet Explorer installed again.

    BTW, reinstalling IE 8 DID'NT help....same issue..had to use the "RUN AS ADMIN" workaround, and it STILL makes shortcuts you made not work to open in new tab/window etc.

    Hi BanditoC15

    What happens when you run IE 8.0 with no add-ons? Click the Start button>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet explorer (No Add-ons). If IE 8.0 opens without the need to run as administrator then one of the add-ons is causing the problem. I had the same problem whereby whenever I tried to open IE 8.0 it simply wouldn't work; however when I right clicked on the Icon and choose 'run as administrator' IE 8.0 opened perfectly. By systematicallt disabling and re-enabling the listed add-ons (making sure you disable the add-on, try to open IE and then, if it still doesn't work, re-enabling the add-on) I was able to locate the problem. In my case Sophos anti virus's web content scanner.

Select the Advanced tab and click on the Reset button at the bottom of the box.

    As far as your registration code - you mean the product key that you were given when you downloaded the OS? If that's the case, you can go into the Start Menu, Accessories | System Tools and click the Activation link there. It will prompt you to enter your product key and walk you through the activation process.

    I tried your suggestion and still same deal....open in new tab and new window still does not work with no addons running.

    No.. A reset goes as follows:

    1.) Open IE 8
    2.) Press the ALT key
    3.) Click Tools | Internet Options
    4.) Click on the Advanced tab
    5.) Click the big button at the bottom that says "RESET..." on it and follow the prompts.

    This will (as the name on the button suggests) reset IE to it's default state. All plug-ins will be removed, passwords saved will need to be reentered, etc.. But there's also a chance it will fix the problem you're having.

    Please do not do the Run as Admin as a workaround.  When you do, take notice at the bottom of the IE window.  See how it says Protected Mode is off?  That means anything any website wants to do, it can.  It has full control over your computer.  And not only that, but it has full Administrator control over your computer -- because you are runing every website with your administrative privilidges.

    Here's how to fix your problem without running IE as an admin:

    1.) Open IE 8
    2.) Press the ALT key
    3.) Click Tools | Internet Options
    4.) Click on the Advanced tab
    5.) Click the big button at the bottom that says "RESET..." on it and follow the prompts.

    Ack.. That's no good.

    About the only thing left would be an "in place upgrade" - where you insert the Win 7 RC DVD into your drive, and run an upgrade to the OS. It will reset the OS to it's default parameters without wiping out your apps and data. The only downside, you'll need to activate again and you'll need to do a Windows update again.

    Ok, heres the deal....

    I have tried all the suggestions so far, including

      *Running Internet Explorer WITHOUT addons running
      *Reseting Internet Explorer settings
      *Reinstalling Internet Explorer
      *Running a file I found online that supposedly reregisters the .dll files, file is named ie8-rereg.cmd located here

      * and finally MANUALLY downloading the .dll files from http://www.dll-files.com/ , starting in safe mode and manually trying to register the .dll files

    And here are the results....

    *Running Internet Explorer WITHOUT addons running
    Did NOT work, still same thing, I get a CONNECTING message on the new tab when I try to "Open in new tab" and when I try to "Open in new window" nothing happens.

    I have also noticed that SOME links when normally clicked do NOT do anything either, I have to right click "copy shortcut" open a new window and paste the link.

    *Reseting Internet Explorer settings
    Did NOT work, still same thing

    *Reinstalling Internet Explorer
    Did NOT work, still same thing, had to rest all my settings and homepage as a result..lol

    *Running a file I found online that supposedly reregisters the .dll files
    When running this file, normally AND "running as admin" I get this error

    Started windows in safe mode (with networking)

    Opened a command prompt
    Changed directories to C:\dll ( cd C:\dll )
    and the proceeded to TRY to register each .dll one at a time...

    And here are the results of each file.....
      *regsvr32 urlmon.dll (Succeded)
      *regsvr32 actxprxy.dll (Succeded)
      *regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (*FAILED) <---
      *regsvr32 mshtml.dll (*FAILED) <---
      *regsvr32 browseui.dll (*FAILED) <---
          Each of the privious files that failed ( <--- ) to register, I got this error message

    So, as you can see...I think I am at the end of my rope as far as things to try to fix this issue....

      HOWEVER, I am thinking after researching the entire web that what might be the cause of this issue is McAfee Antivirus, more specifically McAfee Security Center v9.11.100 and the fact that it is using a popup blocker to stop popups...and thus the NEW TAB and NEW WINDOW in IE8 is being treated as if they WERE popups. And McAfee not allowing them to open.
      But I CANNOT figure out how to disable the popup blocker feature in McAfee Security Center, anyone know how ?

    And there ya have it...a clear and concise breakdown of where I am at with this ongoing STUPIDITY !

    And and ALL further help is GREATLY appreciated as I am about to pull out what hair I DO have left..lol

    Actually no I never found out what to do to fix the issue...HOWEVER, I guess they must have released a windows update patch that resolved the issue...atleast for me....or should I say that just all of a sudden things started working for me again..lol

    Maybe i just got lucky?...dunno....either way, it wont hurt for you to do your windows updates..... :o)

    Hmm..yea...sorry brother..I wish I knew what I did or should I say...what CHANGED on my computer to fix it on my OS. But I dont have a clue.

    I DO KNOW your pain though....As I stated earlier in the thread..My primary way of navigating the web is always "Open in new tab" and I tend to always have a shitton of tabs open at any given moment....I prefer the ability to easily go back a step or 2 without having to reload the pages.

    So yea...I can sympathize with you.

    Luckily, my new strategy is to create images of a fresh OS installation with and without apps using Macrium Reflect.  I was up and running in about 30 minutes and IE8 now works at it should.

    It is sometime since this thread was started.  I have the same problem. One computer is OK.  the other is not and will not open links etc.
    Has anybody come with the correct answer.  I have tried all the suggestions listed without success

    I have 2 versions of IE in Windows 7.
    A 32 bit version and a 64 bit version.
    Check the Start/All Programs.
    The 64 bit version does not have a problem opening in New Tab or New Window.
    The 32 bit version does have a problem with both types of opening.

    I have the same problem.  IE 64bit works fine except there is no flash player and certain websites won't work in 64bit mode.  In 32bit IE I have to copy the link and past it into a 64bit running IE to get to where I need to be. 

    It is drivng me crazy.  I am generally happy with Windows 7 but this IE explorer issue really cuts into my efficiency.

    I am wondering if this has to do anything with the preloaded Dell software.  This was a brand new computer from Dell and the problem started right out of the box.

    I have had the same problem since about a month after starting to use Win7, 64 bit. IE8 would not open a link in a new tab or a new window, whether scripted or using the right click menu. One of the web sites I had to use for work would not work correctly in Chrome or FireFox, so I was frustrated and stuck!

    After reading the discussion above, I discovered that my Win7 has two versions of IE8 - a 32 bit and a 64 bit. There are separate shortcuts in the All Programs list. The 64 bit version of IE8 does NOT have the problem with opening links in a new tab or a new window. Hurrah.... I think.

    I have the same Issue with IE8 on Windows 7 x64. If I use IE8 x32 mode I have all these issues with new tabs, but with admin rights the new tabs works fine. IE8 x64 doesnt have issues with new tabs, connecting, hung up, etc...

    I've run into a situation where I may have broken IE.  I made some customizations via the Windows IEAK, and now we're experiencing some anomalies.  I've tried to uninstall the changes I've made by running msiexec /x and the MSI it created but that doesn't seem to help.

    This brings me to why I'm here:  I want to uninstall and reinstall IE.  I've not been able to find a Windows 7 compatible IE8 download so I was looking for other options.  I stumbled upon this post which has given me hope.

    1. When you do the uninstall/reinstall, where does it reinstall IE8 from?
    2. Is it possible for the core IE8 setup files to become corrupt?
    3. Is this process basically the same as a IE8 on a fresh installation of Win 7?

    1. All of the integrated components in Windows 7, such as IE8 are installed directly from the C:\Windows\Winsxs folder. This folder contains the complete Windows 7 installation files.

    2. Because of the way that Winsxs is designed, it is very unlikely that these files will become corrupt.

    3. Yes. After IE8 is uninstalled using the Turn Windows features on or off component in Control Panel, reinstalling IE8 will completely replace the files.

    Just to clarify.

    The Winsxs folder is much more than just the relatively small dll cache. It also contains the complete Servicing component and it does contain the entire installation files for Windows 7. It also replaces the relatively large i386 folder that contained all of the installation files for XP. This folder was present on most OEM XP installs. 

    When you add a program from the Turn windows features on or off, Windows simply creates hard links, or copies the needed files, that are contained in the Winsxs folder.

    The installation files in the Winsxs folder are also used when you run utilities, such as SFC /SCANNOW to replace corrupted system files.

    Hi Ronnie,

    WINSXS is 2.8 GB wheras i386 was found on OEM installs which was about 500mb and was a perk provided by OEMs so those could be transferred to CD for a slimmer install to avoid OEM extras. You can always delete thosew when finished. Like you said the DLL cache was indeed smaller.

    I could not make a Win 7  DVD from the WINSXS which from what I can tell does not contain anything that can be made into installable media as was the i386 left conveniantly for those who wanted to make a barebones OS. Only the from syspreping the image and PE is it possible with Windows 7.

    Thanks for clarifying this. I think you have explained the winsxs very well all things considered and from your position. I was only pointing several things out which were not entirely pertainent in regards to winsxs just the fact that I am sceptical about some of it's merits although you have responded in kind to the OP's original topic.

    Been having a net access issue for over a week & could not track the problem dowm.  At 1st, thought it was the modem/router, but had those checked out & all ok. about to pull hair out as all rigs on the lan had the same problem, but thought of posting on here.  Before I could, it came up with several threads.

    Read this one & thought wth, it's worth a try.  It worked, so many thanks.  You guys are great.

    (Yet another late comer.)  NOT SOLVED as far as I can tell from reading the thread.  There looks to be two solutions:

    1. Run 64 bit version of iNet Explorer (I tried this and it did work for me), or

    2. Run 32 bit version as Admin (I tried this and it didn't work for me).

    BUT the real problem is that (under x64 bit Win7) running 32 bit iNet Explorer "suddenly" starts failing to open new tabs or windows from the same instance.  I can manually open a tab and then cut & paste a link from search page results, BUT right clicking and selecting "Open in a new tab" causes the new tab to open but to never connect.

    Using 64 bit iNet is a work around, EXCEPT that Adobe Flash (and who knows what others) doesn't work with it; only the 32 bit version.  So this workaround is unacceptable.

    I'm guessing that my messing with the registry triggered the problem.  So the question to me is

    "How can I reset ALL iNet Explorer registry settings to original values AND restore any deleted keys?"

    And yes, I can use Chrome, and am doing so.  But I want to fix what was broken.  BTW, I installed Beta iNet 9 and that didn't solve the problem either.  The problem also extends across ALL the userids on my machine.  Yes this could be dlls, but I'm inclined to think it points to registry issues.  So, thoughts?  Help?

    Update: For the nonce I've switched to Chrome--I can't stomach the "upgrade in place" approach as I've reinstalled everything from scratch once already.  (Including all the downloaded updates.  Ugh.)

    However, on re-reading the thread, it occurs to me that I've changed the owner on almost all my C: drive files TO Administrator.  No doubt a mistake, but I'm constantly fighting permissions and UAC...is there something special about "Trusted Installer" ownership I should know?  Did anyone else mess with their permissions prior to the occurence of the problem?

    I also like the idea of an over zealous pop-up blocker.  But the only add-ins I've got running (and I tried w/o add-ins) are from Adobe, and their disabled...

    This is EXACTLY the problem I have had for months.  It is infuriating.  And you can't even set the 64-bit version as the default.  I have tried several suggested solutions and none of them have helped at all.  The ONLY workaround I have found is Firefox.  And I was not messing around with the registry when it started.

    It is now Jan 2011 and I have the same problem,  issue where "Open in new tab" or "open in new window" does not work.....  Is anyone looking into the root cause of why this happens?  Obviously it is not an isolated issue.

    BGW2: Unfortunately I have not made much progress on my end.  I decided to take a different approach and instead of building an IE customization package via IEAK I successfully integrated them via GPO.  Much easier and cleaner IMHO.

    Having said that however I still have two users with a very similar issue.  Since its unique to these two individuals, and not the several dozens of other people who are on the same image, I'm inclined to believe its user specific.  It just so happens they both have a common application installed thats (a) not compatible with Windows 7 and (b) loads an IE add-in.

    Is this on a fresh install of Windows 7?
    Did it ever work normally?
    Did it the loss in functionality seem to coincide with a software installation or uninstallation?  What about a Windows system/configuration change?

    I assume you've already tried uninstalling IE and reinstalling IE, yes?

    Ok, heres the deal....

    I have tried all the suggestions so far, including

      *Running Internet Explorer WITHOUT addons running
      *Reseting Internet Explorer settings
      *Reinstalling Internet Explorer
      *Running a file I found online that supposedly reregisters the .dll files, file is named ie8-rereg.cmd located here

      * and finally MANUALLY downloading the .dll files from http://www.dll-files.com/ , starting in safe mode and manually trying to register the .dll files

    And here are the results....

    *Running Internet Explorer WITHOUT addons running
    Did NOT work, still same thing, I get a CONNECTING message on the new tab when I try to "Open in new tab" and when I try to "Open in new window" nothing happens.

    I have also noticed that SOME links when normally clicked do NOT do anything either, I have to right click "copy shortcut" open a new window and paste the link.

    *Reseting Internet Explorer settings
    Did NOT work, still same thing

    *Reinstalling Internet Explorer
    Did NOT work, still same thing, had to rest all my settings and homepage as a result..lol

    *Running a file I found online that supposedly reregisters the .dll files
    When running this file, normally AND "running as admin" I get this error

    For some reason it says I dont have permission to reregister the files...even though I DID try running the file as admin...

      *mshtml.dll
      *browseui.dll
      *jscript.dll

    Started windows in safe mode (with networking)
    Copied the /dll files to a directory named C:\dll
    Opened a command prompt
    Changed directories to C:\dll ( cd C:\dll )
    and the proceeded to TRY to register each .dll one at a time...

    And here are the results of each file.....
      *regsvr32 urlmon.dll (Succeded)
      *regsvr32 actxprxy.dll (Succeded)
      *regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (*FAILED) <---
      *regsvr32 mshtml.dll (*FAILED) <---
      *regsvr32 browseui.dll (*FAILED) <---
          Each of the privious files that failed ( <--- ) to register, I got this error message

    So, as you can see...I think I am at the end of my rope as far as things to try to fix this issue....

      HOWEVER, I am thinking after researching the entire web that what might be the cause of this issue is McAfee Antivirus, more specifically McAfee Security Center v9.11.100 and the fact that it is using a popup blocker to stop popups...and thus the NEW TAB and NEW WINDOW in IE8 is being treated as if they WERE popups. And McAfee not allowing them to open.
      But I CANNOT figure out how to disable the popup blocker feature in McAfee Security Center, anyone know how ?

    And there ya have it...a clear and concise breakdown of where I am at with this ongoing STUPIDITY !

    And and ALL further help is GREATLY appreciated as I am about to pull out what hair I DO have left..lol

    I think you were right on with it being a McAfee issue.  I was reading through this threat and saw you put that there.  I downloaded and ran MCPR.exe (McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool) from this site http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe and it fixed this issue!  Hope this helps someone in the future.

    when i use this method. i find the programs registry entrys are indeed remove but the ie program is still in ..\program files\internet explorer(protected by WRP of course). so you can't delete them. if you try and re-install ie8 or 9. all you get is a message telling you you already have ie8 so you can't install the new version. i should not have to re-install windows 7 on a machine that serves 6 other computers. just for a friggin' browser.

    I'm having a different problem with IE, but some of the suggestions here could be helpful. I am unable to run IE8 in any mode, as admin, etc. When I try to uninstall it as suggested above, no windows components show up in the popup box, so I cannot uninstall it. That, in itself, is curious. This wouldn't be a problem cuz IE9 is now out, but I have not been able to install it. Apparently, Win7 sp1 needs to be installed and I'm holding off that for awhile till all the bugs get worked out.

    Any suggs would be appreciated.

    Thnx Andre. I looked at both methods and neither will work for me. If I use scannow, I'll have to update everything all over again and I have bandwidth quotas. System Restore would work, but I'd lose a month or more of settings, etc. which I don't want to do either. Guess I'll just wait till I get the go ahead to install sp1. Thnx again.

    Wow, old thread but the issue remains.

    I'm running Win7-64 and have this same issue.  I'm able to make it a little better by disabling Protected Mode, but it's still an issue.

    I am not running McAfee, as was mentioned as a possible cause of the issue in a previous post.

    I have the issue in both 32 an 64 bit IE.

    The inability to open tabs is also acompanied by IE becoming unresponsive when trying to move between different zones.

    I have reset IE to default and have all updates applied.

    My next step will be to check if this is isolated to my profile or is system wide.  I'll post back after that test.

    OK, this has to be one of the oddest issues I've solved.

    The solution for me was to stop using Synergy as a server on my Windows 7 box.  Synergy is an application that allows me to share one keyboard nad mouse between multiple systems.  I find it difficult to believe that the others in this thread were using synergy too, but for what it's worth, that was the fix for me.

    Go to Control Panel\Programs and Features\Turn Windows features on or off. Uncheck Internet Explorer 8, click OK and reboot. You will be not have Internet Explorer installed then. Go to Windows features again and check Internet Explorer 8, reboot. Now you will have Internet Explorer installed again.

    When I went to Turn Windows features on or off, Internet Explorer 8 wasn't listed 9 was there instead. So if this happens where do I go from this point to get IE8 re-installed?

    There is not a fix. My IE-9-32 bit stopped working. I paid them $100 for one year of support and they did a

    Windows 7 repair reinstall which fixed the issue till it becomes corrupted again.
