mmc.exe won't open - application error 0x80000004 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody, I hope someone can help me with this problem:

I'm trying to open the Microsoft Management Console (by right-clicking Computer > Manage) because my external hard drive isn't showing up and I want to check device manager and disk management to see if there are any problems.  But when I click "Manage" I get an error that says "mmc.exe - Application error.  The application was unable to start correctly (0x80000004). Click OK to close the application."

I've searched around the web to try to find some answers, but not much has come up.  Someone suggested to run the Command Prompt sfc/scannow, but it hasn't fixed anything.  After running it, it does say "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I don't really know and don't really feel comfortable exploring the Command Prompt further...

Any insight on this issue would be much appreciated!  I need to get my external hard drive up and working again!  Or at least find out what's wrong with it :)  Thanks!

With sfc you're on the right way.

Create the txt file shown under [1] and look which files can't be replaced and override them with the files from your DVD [2].

    best regards

  • Thanks! I'll give this a try.  One problem though...I don't have a DVD of Windows 7 because I downloaded the upgrade over the internet...is there another way to get the uncorrupted files?

    Thanks again!
