Is the BitLocker Recovery Key the same thing as the TPM Owner Password? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have a few related questions around BitLocker and TPM.  But first some background, I have Windows 8.1, I have BitLocker turned on, and I have my BitLocker Recovery Key.  I did not manually initialize the TPM.  I don't recall ever having a TPM Owner password.  But I do see that I can auto generate one, although I have not tried.

    1) Is the BitLocker Recovery Key the same thing as the TPM Owner Password?

    2) I don't recall ever being provided the TPM owner password during the BitLocker setup?  Where would I find it?  I chose the option to save the BitLocker Recovery Key to my Microsoft Account, but I don't see any TPM Owner Password?

    3) I have read that in some Windows OS systems the TPM is automatically initialized, but the TPM Owner Password is not retain where a user can find it.  Is it best practice to even try to obtain the TPM Owner Password if it is indeed not retained on my machine for user viewing.

I have already spent several hours reading many of your technet articles.  All very helpful, but I did not see any that specifically addressed my specific situation.

    4) I am assuming that it would be best if I obtained the TPM Owner password.  Is that not necessarily true?

    Thanks
