Project Professional 2007 - Configuring account profile when deploying/installing RRS feed

  • Hi,

    I already have Project Professional 2007 installation customized using Office 2007 Customization Tool. The tool is automatic/silently installed on user's computer.

    Right now, the users are configuring the connection to Project Server 2007 manually by going to "Tools" menu and setting up the appropriate options. I'm trying to automate this so that it's already set for the user but can't find any documentation on this and OCT 2007 doesn't seem to have any option for this either.

    Is there any way of achieving this?

  • Don't know about 2007, but I've done this in 2010 with no issues.  Can't recall how.  We either deployed a registry change or used Paul Mather's instructions here:

    yes. With 2007 it is/was nearly the same. You can also just create the profile for one user, export the registry keys from the HKCU hive and import it back to the users profiles.

    I did see Paul's blog post on Project 2010. Actually, that's the only resource I could find online.

    I'll try it out, but since the profile is located in HKCU, it's going to be difficult automating that part because the installation typically takes place silently under different account than the logged in user's account. Sometimes, the user might not even be logged into the computer.

    there seem to exist software distribution tools that can do that. I have customers that distribute the profile settings with the software. But I have not done it myself.

    We normally let either the users create the profiles themselfes - teach it as part of the implementation training. If you do not want to do that, I would recommend to put a link to the .reg file for import somewhere on the PWA site.

    Both workarounds of course, but they work normally.

    Or you would have to put the profile reg import into the login script.

    You're right that those are workarounds and I'm sure they'll work but they seem not so efficient.

    We do have distribution tools that we're using for deploying software silently to computers. The distribution tool doesn't uses different accounts for deploying software. I think automating the registry approach is going to be complicated because settings are stored in User profile hives as opposed to local machine.

    Using login script could also work, but that's just going to unnecessarily make changes to the registry. The profile in registry needs to be created once and using login script will update it everytime.

    Currently the users are creating the profile themselves. I just looking for some kind of automation option that could possible remove this first time setup step for the users.

    Too bad this version 2010 is also going to be same in this case :)
