• Question

  • Hi. Have a win 7 Dell Home Premium, yesterday, given to me, drive, memory all new., etc. i see by the update history that the last update was successful in 2013, and one i did yesterday, but for Adobe automatically. i get notifications that windows cannot update automatically. checked settings, changed, still could not update, troubleshoot says nothing is wrong. yet it won't check for updates. the green bar checks but there are no updates. last KB was in the 2999 range, 2013 SP.  there have to be updates available since this time. what do i need to download to fix this problem?

    thanks so much.

  • Hi Angie.

You could try running the System Update Readiness Tool (read here) and then search for updates; if this cannot fix the issue, you can reset the Windows Update components as per Microsoft Knowledge Base article 971058 and search for updates again.
Alternatively, you can manually install the latest Cumulative Update for Windows (KB4471318): the installation package can be downloaded from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4471318.

  • Did you want to remain with Windows 7 or are you considering upgrading to Windows 10?

  • Hi Luigi, thanks so much for responding. I followed instructions for the CU for Win, eventually getting to the cmd, and meticulously entered the cmd, and error: Access denied. I am the admin for this computer, so I don't understand why access is denied.

I was in touch with MS tech who remotely accessed my PC, and tried to fix the problem, and failed. He first removed my MS security and Win firewall, and when he couldn't fix the update problem, he signed off w/o reinstalling the security. Fortunately i have knowledge of how to do some things on a limited basis, so the reinstall is fine, and even the security updates are downloading automatically for security.

However, in the win updates message window, it still reads that i have never checked for updates, and yet it is set on automatic, and i do check manually. it also erroneously says that my last update was in Dec 18, although the security updates are as recent as this a.m.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.  I think I'll try going back to a restore point, prior to Dec 18.  That may work.
