Exchange Online Outlook 2016 password loop RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're getting slammed with people having problems with Outlook password boxes continually popping up all of a sudden.  We're using Exchange online and using Windows 10 clients with the Office version 1808 to 1809.

These issues all have seemed to start once the Outlook login experience changed to the "Use this account everywhere" screen you get when logging into Outlook for the first time.

    Troubleshooting steps taken:

Ran the Outlook diagnostic utility (Everything checked out fine)

    Disabled MFA (Still got prompts)

    Changed password

    New Outlook profile

    Downgraded Office version

Logged out of Office apps cleared credential manager, disconnected the Office 365 account from Windows 10 and deleted the "identity" registry key

Added the registry key to disable the web accounts manager

Contacted Microsoft Support (no luck either, their response was to reimage the workstation)

The things that have seemed to work was to either reset the Windows 10 installation or to create a new login on the computer.  This indicates that it's profile/computer related and not account/tenant, so either registry or profile specific files installed with Office 365 is the culprit.

I've got 10 incidents with this same behavior going on right now.

  • Worked with Premiere Support on this.  There is a new registry key that fixed this behavior.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity]

  • Hi Corey,

According to your description, it seems to be a client issue more that an exchange online issue, therefore, I'll move this thread to Outlook forum,  as they should have more professional knowledge on outlook and you may get effective solution timely.

    Thanks for your understanding,

    Best Regards,
    Niko Cheng

  • It’s a client issue, but it’s related to the exchange online service though

  • Hi,

How many users are affected by this issue?

We may try renaming the \Outlook part of the following registry path to \Outlook-1, and then restart Outlook to see whether it helps. Test this on one of the affected computers and let us know the result.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook

Besides, do you have Focused Inbox turned on? If so, try turning Modern Authentication back on temporarily, turning off Focused Inbox, then turning Modern Authentication off to see the result. There is a known issue when you have Modern Authentication turned off but keep Focused Inbox enabled. See Outlook 2016 prompts for credentials after disabling Modern Authentication for more details.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Steve Fan

  • Thanks Steve.  We now have about 12 users currently affected by this.  I got two more reports of it last night.  We have Modern Authentication enabled in our tenant.

I tried the registry rename.  Opened Outlook and the account setup fine.  Outlook opened and downloaded all the email and then started with the login prompt loop.  Outlook connection manager shows everything is connected but the login prompts still come up.  If I cancel, then Outlook shows "Need Password".

  • I also have a few users using Windows 10 and Office 2016 using Exchange 2010 having the same issue.   Out of nowhere they get prompted to enter a password. If they cancel Outlook is not connected anymore and needs a password. If they enter the credentials Outlook works for about 5 minutes and then does the same thing over and over again.  The same mailserver works fine using on a Remote Desktop Server 2016 with Outlook 2016.   I only see the problem on Windows 10 systems with Outlook 2016.  I am almost sure this must be a bug in a Windows Update that was installed this week.

  • I would be curious if you login to the affected PC with a different profile and then setup Outlook as the same user experiencing the issue if it will work.

  • I have logged on to one of the affected pc's with a different user (never logged on before so fresh non-roaming profile) this user has exactly the same problem. Does not seem to be related to a user or particular mailboxes

  • Well, I have another two users that reported the behavior over the weekend.

  • I've been able to successfully recreate the issue on my test laptop.

The Office version was 1803 (9126.2295) on the Windows 10 laptop and everything was working fine.

I updated to Office version 1809 (10827.20150) and everything was still working.

Disconnected the O365 account from Windows 10 and cleared credential manager.  Opened Outlook which prompted me to login.  Upon the successful login I got the "Use this account everywhere" screen which I selected Yes and let my organization control my device.  Now Outlook is constantly prompting me for login information.

Now I saved several system snapshots and have been able to rollback to a previous snapshot and recreate the steps to produce the behavior.  I also updated to Office version 1809 (10827.20138) and got the same behavior.

The issue seems to still be with the Web Accounts Manager in Windows 10.  In the past we've been able to work around the WAM issues with either the registry entry to disable WAM or by disconnecting the O365 account from Windows 10.  Neither are working now.

  • I also have this problem on pc's (Windows 10 + Office 2016) that are joined into a domain. When you start Outlook you see the three checkmarks (no need to enter password). After that the mailbox opens and Exchange is online. After a few minutes Exchange asks for a password again. I will try the registry fix to see if this helps.

This one doesn't do anything for me. It still gives me the same password prompts.

I've also tried different regedit entries, but nothing helps.

We have Outlook 2016 1809 with a local domain and exchange 2013.

I'm now so far that I know the problems only appear on Outlook 2016 1809. I've downgraded the pc to Outlook 2016 1803 and all prompts are gone. This happens on Windows 7 and a new Windows 10 1803 pc.

So there is something wrong with Outlook 2016 1809. (I've also update to the latest build 10827.20181)

Same problems happen on all 1809 builds.

I've updated Exchange 2013 to the latest update, but it didn't help.

The only thing that helps is going back to Outlook 2016 1803 and disable the updates.

I can't find any working solution, other than 1803.

    Anymore ideas?

  • That registry key only works for Exchange Online and Outlook 2016.

Did you try this key to disable the web accounts manager in Windows 10:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity]

    "DisableADALatopWAMOverride"=dword:00000001

Also doesn't work. Still get the same credential popups.

Maybe it will be fixed with the 1809 update of Windows 10?

  • I fixed the problem for me.

    see this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/9oowxy/outlook_365_2016_build_1809_1082720150/

Add this DWORD to the registry: (I had to create the autodiscover folder)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\autodiscover
    DWORD: ExcludeExplicitO365Endpoint
    Value = 1

Now outlook connects fine without any prompts.

  • It's pretty sad that this has been an ongoing issue since 2017 (at the latest), with it continuing into 2019, even with the very latest Outlook builds.

Here are a couple sprawling "mother" threads for the issue, one of which is in Uservoice (even sadder), where one can get further ideas of things to throw against the wall to see if they stick (particularly via the 2nd thread).

    "

The fix is to create the following Registry keys on affected machine:

    Navigate to

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover

(x.0 corresponds to the Outlook version: 16.0 = Outlook 2016)

For Outlook 2016 version 16.0.6741.2017 and later versions, please add the following:

    DWORD: ExcludeExplicitO365Endpoint
    VALUE: 1"
