Reasons to adopt Teams (as opposed to Skype for Business) RRS feed

    We are currently running Exchange 2016 on-prem, Skype for Business On-Prem. We use S4B for IM, Presence, and voice/video.

    We are looking at O365 and hosting some data in the Cloud.

    Teams maybe a driver for O365, but is there any material on the benefits of leveraging Teams rather than continuing down the path of Skype for Business on Prem.

  • Teams is designed for the cloud, but as far as "driving" the move to O365 is concerned, I'd advise some caution. It certainly lacks some functionalities that you might be used to with SfB On-Prem, even basic stuff such as being able to send IMs to federated users. Recording is another example. Calling has recently become available, but it's limited to some countries only (read US, western Europe). And for it to all work as expected, you need all your users/workloads in O365.

    In other words, do your research based on the features you are currently using on-premises and don't trust the MS marketing blindly. Realistically, if you are just starting the move to O365, you will probably need few months to complete it, and by that time MS will should solve most of the current issues/limitations. And of course, you can simply take it for a test drive - get a trial tenant, create some users and see what the fuzz is all about.
