Sharepoint unavailable due to IP changes on front and backend RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

My client has moved thier Front and Backend sharepoint servers to a new site.  They changed the IP address through Windows but made no changes to sharepoint. The frontend now can't access the configuration database.

I'm not to hot on sharepoint but this has landed on my desk.

Any ideas on how I can get this back up?

And is there any official microsoft documentation on how this should have been done in the first place?

    Thanks.

    Martin.

  • Which SharePoint product?

In the meantime check out the appropriate stsadm options.

I've had no experience with stsadm, it's a bit duanting.  Can you give me a pointer to the switches I might need?.

And is it definitely doable?  I don't want to waste my time if it's not possibe to get it back up without restoring it.

  • It is definitely doable. The problem is almost certainly that the database thinks it still belongs to a SharePoint system at the old IP address (writing this makes we wonder if they also changed the server name (of the SP server) at the same time). There's some statement that puts that right.

Someone will be along soon with the correct one - I've seen a post on it recently here in the forums but can't remember it off-hand.

  • Possibly this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263117(office.12).aspx although that is after a name change.

Check the other items near to that statement in the total list here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263384(office.12).aspx for instance Renamesite is what they should have done (and maybe still should).

But you are best waiting for someone else because it's a while since I did this. (It's easier to avoid things by doing them right in the first time which is not what your people did before it was dumped on you (!)).

Is there any way to show what that server name is?  Bearing in mind that iot can't connect to the database?
