Does WSUS 2012 R2 support Windows Server 2016 clients? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does WSUS 2012 R2 support Windows Server 2016 clients?  I have a Server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with WSUS installed.  Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Server 2012 R2, Server 2012, and Server 2008 R2 clients connect properly and get updates.  I recently installed a couple Windows Server 2016 clients and they do not work with our WSUS running on 2012 R2 it appears.  I have group policy setup the same as all the other clients pointing to our WSUS server, I've check the registry and see the settings there.  When I check for updates on the Server 2016 box, I get the message "We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet."  This 2016 client is on a network that is not connected to the Internet so it can only connect to our WSUS server.

On the WSUS server I see the 2016 client computer and it says that it has checked in.  That doesn't really make any sense and I know there are updates for Server 2016 but nothing shows up in the list of updates to approve.  I found this KB https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3194798 and installed it on the Server 2016 box, rebooted and tried again but it still doesn't work.

Is there something that needs to be configured on our 2012 R2 WSUS server to properly support Server 2016 clients or what is going on?  Thanks.

  • Well, suddenly the one that wasn't checking in at all checked in.  I approved the 2016 updates and it is installing it now.  The other one that checked in but didn't find any needed updates even though it does, still isn't working.  I removed it from WSUS and deleted the unique, stopped the Windows Update service, deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarted the Windows Update service.  It still doesn't work.  I don't get it.

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the delayed reply.

First, is the Windows Server 2016 has reported on the Windows Server 2012 R2 WSUS server?

If not, I suggest you try to use Windows update troubleshooter for Windows 10 to reset Windows update components on Windows Server 2016.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/971058/how-do-i-reset-windows-update-components

And I suggest you try to install the latest cumulative update for Windows Server 2016 manually. Then connect to WSUS server to get updates. If the server is not connected with internet, you could download then copy to Windows Server 2016.

    Best Regards,

    Jay

  • Yes, I now have 3 Windows Server 2016 servers that have reported on the WSUS server.

One of the 2016 servers checked into the WSUS server and downloaded an update after the configuration manager client installed, however it did not download and update Silverlight to the latest version. I installed a newer version of Silverlight manually but not the latest version in hopes it would download that one but it did not do that either. I checked the WSUS server and the Silverlight update that is needed is approved for installation so I know it is available. This server was created from an image that was sysprepped and the image did connect to the WSUS server before I ran sysprep on it and downloaded the latest cumulative update but no longer will download the latest version of Silverlight.

Another 2016 server was upgraded from 2012 R2 and that one checks in to WSUS, or at least that's what it says in WSUS but it will not download and install any of the monthly cumulative updates. I manually installed the October one and tried again, but it would not find any updates. I then installed the November one manually and tried again but still no luck.

  • Still not sure why that one upgraded server does not check into WSUS.

I have opened a case with Microsoft to determine why Silverlight is not being updates on Server 2016 for all other 2016 servers.  Hopefully it is just Silverlight and no other Microsoft apps.

I see the same issue regarding Silverlight. Windows 2016 servers do not update Silverlight from WSUS.
I have noticed that some Windows 2016 servers installed from an ISO without any updates have had issues regarding updates/WSUS. We currently use a template that is patched/updated, and see no issues with servers installed from the template (apart from the Silverlight update).

  • Here is the latest update with the case I have open:

"This is to update you that after testing in lab with different scenarios,  the current Silverlight patch doesn’t have detection logic set for 2016 servers and when we contacted product group we got a confirmation that they are supposed to have SL released slated for 3rd week of march and they will add it then."

So a fix is in the works.

  • Install KB3095113 on your Windows 2012 WSUS server and this will allow Windows 2016 server to be seen & patched.

  • You also need to install KB3159706. And don't forget to do the post install steps after you install this update.

  • Don't install KB3159706, it breaks WSUS.  you need to install KB3095113-v2
