Bug in the compact program? Lots of backslashes in path RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm using Windows 7 x64 SP1. My C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory is compressed so I tried to uncompress it from the command line. Here is the command I used:

    compact /U /S /I C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\*

At some point in I see a few files repeated over and over again. Also there are a lot of backslashes. Here is what it looks like:

Any idea what's going on here and how I can work around it? I'm using the /I option to ignore file errors, otherwise compact will stop without doing much. But with the /I option I have the problem above.

    Thanks

  • Never seen this before. Majority of people are trying to remove this folder, when there are specific problems and system will create and populate folder again.

Leave parameter /I to see possible errors.

  • An update? No. Can you see if someone from Microsoft will identify the cause? Thanks

  • Hi,

I mean if you tried to leave parameter /I to see if there is any error information about this process.

  • There is no way to do it without /I because some files are in use

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Also I can no longer reproduce the problem because the directories in download are now gone. Still it's a weird problem someone should check on it.

  • Hi,

I suspect this  could be related to one of some errors occurred in the process, if this issue reoccurs, we could try to test in the safe mode to check result.
