having trouble publishing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am the site administrator of a publishing site collection.  I think the publishing functionality has gotten messed up somehow (perhaps because I turned it off once in order to upload new docs without having to go through all the approval steps?).  I have updated a content editor web part on a page.  However I'm the only one that can see this change.  I do not see the publishing tool bar that usually shows at the top of the page.  Also, under Site Actions > View Reports > All Draft Documents, this page does not show, or under Pending Approval.

Question - why does my publishing bar no longer show?

Question - why isn't the document showing up in either of my Reports?

How do I publish this page?

  • Thanks BlueSky - I think I had poked around in it some time ago.  I was able to publish it without unexpected results.

  • Have you tried turning that on from Site actions > Show page editing toolbar?

    Hope that helps!

  • I was able to go into Designer and see that the page needed to be checked in.  Can anyone tell me why that was necessary? What might have gone wrong through the UI?

  • Well I guess that answers the issue - since you never checked in the page (after editing the webpart) - it did not show up upder the reports. But if you checked from the Pages library - it would have showed you that page was checked out to you.

Also if you had the Page Editing Toolbar turned on - you should have seen that from the UI as well (without the need to go through the Designer).

    Does that make sense?

  • BlueSky, "Show Page Editing Toolbar" is not available from Site Actions for this page. This may be because this default.aspx lies at the site collection root and not in a Pages folder?

  • Yes, it all makes sense, but the Reports (views) that are available under Site Content and Structure are showing odd things.  For example, if I look under Pending Approval there are 4 Word documents in there. If I select them (check their box), the look under the Actions menu, only Copy, Move, Delete, and Check Out are available menu items.  The others are grayed out.  Also these documents are indeed already available to any visitor to the site. There appears no way to get rid of what is showing in this list. There are many, many documents showing in the All Draft Documents view/report. These documents, too, are already visible to anyone.  This is disconcerting, because now I have no idea which documents may or may not be visible to users in the future.

  • As an experiment, I just went into the Show All Draft Documents view/report.  I selected one document, checked it out, then checked it back in.  It still shows up in the All Draft Documents. Am I misunderstanding something?

  • hmm...you can double check from the Draft Item Security (Library > Settings > Documet Library Settings > Versionining settings > ) for that particular library (where thoese draft items are located)? If you have 'any user who can read items' selected there - draft items would be viewable by everyone who has read access.

I would suggest to choose 'Only users who can edit items' instead for the Draft item security.

  • Do you mean Show Page Editing Toolbar is ghosted (that you can't select)? I find this happens when you have either the menu already selected or someone else checked out the page.

  • Well you would need either approve or reject the draft. If you just check out and then check the document back in - it's approval status won't change. If you go to the Version History from the draft document's drop down menu you would see that document (the one you experimented with) would have a minor version (say 2.1) and this is why it's still showing up under the draft reports.

From the draft document's drop down menu (Site Content and Structure > All Draft Documents) choose "Publish". Once this is done this document would go away from the Drafts report. You would then go to the Pending Approval reports section and either Approve (/Reject) to get a major version of the document.

    Hope this helps!

  • BlueSky - with regards to Draft Item Security.  I checkec a couple of the libraries.  Content Approval is set to NO, so all Draft Item Security it grayed out.

REgarding the "Show Page Editing Toolbar" menu item.  It is not in my Site Actions menu at all. The page is not checked out.

Regarding trying to Publish.  When I am in the All Draft Documents view, and open the drop down menu for one of the draft items, there is not Publish option. There is only: delete, copy, move, View properties, manages permissions, version history, view related resources, and check out.

Could this odd behavior happen if there were items in draft or pending approval and then I turn off requiring content approval or versioning?  This is a new site I am creating and at one point I got sick of all the approval stuff since I was just loading the new site up from some old shared drive folder. If so, is there anything I can do about it now?

  • I was able to clear everything up by turning back on content approval.

There is one file left in All Drafts, and that is ContentQueryMain.xsl.  I don't know what that is, do you?

  • Okay - now it makes sense why you weren't seeing stuff you were suppose to :-)

You better keep that XSL file - check this out.

  • Not sure how this ended up in the draft mode - has anyone update the styles?

If I were you I would check the version history for this and find out who may have updated this. If you want you can go back to the last major version. Sorry can't be anymore help on this. :-)
