issues authenticating against exchange 2003 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello:

Please forgive this if it's in the wrong place, I couldn't find an exchange 2003 forum.

    Here's the question:

I have 2 different web apps configured in my forest on the same server and exchange on the 2nd server.  Wen I enter the authentication information to allow these apps to send email to users on my domain (all internal sending no external connectors since this is a lab all users are for example cfleischmann@winx-cesd-us.local, jmccurdy@winx-cesd...local, llohan@winx-cesd...local) I'm getting the following:

[invision power board running at http://10.255.255.253/contribute]

Password not accepted from the server
    535 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful. wen sending to llohan@winx-cesd...local

the software is conifgured to use the following settings to send mail:

    mail type: SMTP

    server: xds-dc.winx-cesd-us.local

    smtp port: 25

username: I've tried many varriations including administrator winx-cesd-us.local\administrator, and administrator@winx-cesd-us.local

password: the administrator accounts active directory password (for testing purposes rootpass (all lowercase))

    server command: EHELO

    [atlassian confluence running at http://10.255.255.253:8090]

settings: same server, username, and password as above (no option to specify port or HELO/EHELO)

    with errors:

An error has occurred with sending the test email:

all of what i've read tells me there's some sort of authentication issue between the web apps and the exchange box but I've done everything i can think of to make both applications play nice with my exchange 2003 server to no avail so now to ask the community.  any idea on this one.  This lab setup is meant to mirror and test my company's intranet setup thus these applications will not need to communicate to the outside world.

  • I have moved your post to the Exchange 2003 forum, but upon further reflection, it's most appropriate for the development forum, and I'm not authorized to move from the Exchange 2003 forum.

I recommend that you post this in the Development Forum:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrdevelopment/threads

  • Hi,

For your question, I notice that authentication failed when 3rd web app send message to Exchange user.
If I misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Do you add anonymous SMTP hosts to allow relay list under SMTP Virtual Server Properties, Access tab, Relay?
You need install the SMTP service from IIS first, then add IP address to allow relay list.

  • Hi,

Please try to use Telnet to test SMTP communicate with Exchange server, for your reference:

  • Hello:

OK After running telnet this is an interesting state:

the command "helo" is recognized yet "ehelo" is not

when using helo this is the session output:

220 xds-dc.WINX-CESD-US.LOCAL Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.39
    59 ready at Tue, 29 Dec 2015 14:50:03 -0800
    ehelo
    500 5.3.3 Unrecognized command
    helo
    250 xds-dc.WINX-CESD-US.LOCAL Hello [10.255.255.253]
    auth login winx-cesd-us.local
    503 5.5.2 Send hello first.

Update: telling my web apps there is no authentication needed seams to resolve my issues.  No Idea why either, but it works.

  • The command is EHLO, not EHELO.

  • OK Thanks on that:

now that I got command right, I do "auth login" and am prompted for username and password in Base64.  I enter the following:

    Username: administrator

    Base64 value: YWRtaW5pc3RyYXRvcg==

    Password: rootpass

    Base64 value: cm9vdHBhc3M=

    --

uppon entering these values I get "535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful."

  • Yeah, that's hard to test using telnet.

So, if via telnet I'm getting 535 5.7.3 authentication unsuccessful what could be causing this and how to fix it?  Thanks ahead all for your valued and helpful input on this.

  • when attempting to sign in via telnet to do the EHLO test, I've tried the following formats for username:

    • Administrator
    • Administrator@WINX-CESD-US.LOCAL
    • Administrator@WINX-CESD-US
    • WINX-CESD-US.LOCAL\Administrator
    • WINX-CESD-US\Administrator

and the password for the administrator account in AD which for the purposes of this lab is "rootpass" all lowercase without the quotes.  No matter what format of username I give it I wind up with authentication failed.

Is there a way to check through system manager what the format of the username should be?  Are all the authentication responses Case-Sensitive?  I'm 99.999% sure the password is, but not sure on the username.

  • I've never known the user name to be case sensitive.

  • Hmmm... Makes me wonder domain\username... Should I or should I not include the ".local" at the end of domain?
    Sunday, January 3, 2016 7:39 AM
  • It wouldn't hurt but it shouldn't be necessary.  It might be helpful to step back and explain exactly what you're trying to do. In general, sending SMTP to port 25 for an internal user shouldn't require authentication since it's the way you receive mail from the Internet.

  • ok here we go: 4 systems all intended to facilitate employee communication and collaboration: 1. Invision power board as blog, gallery, foeum, download manager. This needs to send email for user notifications and the like 2. Microsoft dynamics CRM 3. Kayako fusion as employee help desk system. Each help desk department email will send out example telecom.support, hr.support, etc. etc. 4. Atlassian confluence as a collaborative documentation system (wiki) All of these systems need to communicate to individual employees, some of these systems don't have an option to send via SMTP without authentication. That I can find

  • That really doesn't help me because it doesn't say how you're connecting.  Try connecting using Outlook and a POP3 client, which sends using SMTP.  That should help you configure the client settings.

  • OK:

I did a quick test using mozilla thunderbird, plugged in my details as:

    • name "Fleischmann, Carly"
    • email: cfleischmann@winx-cesd-us.local
    • password: ChangeMe123 (for troubleshooting purposes I've changed it to this)
    • and do next then manual config

for mailserver setting i enter the following:

    • incoming server settings:
    • Protocol: POP
    • Server: xds-dc.winx-cesd-us.local
    • Port: 143
    • Encryption: Autodetect
    • Authentication: Autodetect
    • Outgoing Server
    • Protocol: SMTP
    • Server: xds-dc.winx-cesd-us.local
    • Port: 25
    • Encryption: Autodetect
    • Authentication: Autodetect

along with multiple forms of user name as specified earlier in this thread.  I am still getting an authentication failure about bad user name or password.

    Friday, January 8, 2016 11:58 PM
  • I believe that "name" should be of the form DOMAIN\USER or the UPN, which may or may not be the same as the e-mail address.

Are you sure that "email" is correct?  That certainly isn't a valid Internet e-mail address.

Make sure the account doesn't require a password change at first logon because SMTP clients can't do that.

There are a lot of Internet sites that instruct how to connect Thunderbird to Exchange 2010, you might want to compare your settings with those.

  • Hi:

I managed to do a standard EHLO test from the server to itself and I got an authentication success:

    username: Administrator

    Password: ColdStage2004

so is there something wrong with the administrator account?  if the account authenticated correctly on the command line why is it not liking the same settings when I go to configure a client (both outlook express 6 and thunderbird are failing)

    Sunday, January 10, 2016 5:47 AM
  • I don't know exactly what caused this, but:

solution was create a separate AD users mailadmin@winx-cesd-us.local in the default users container then use the following in the mail settings:

    mail server: xds-dc.WINX-CESD-US.LOCAL

    username: mailadmin

    Password: <User AD Password>

    port 25

etc. etc. still no idea why I cannot seam to get all this to play nice with third party mail clients but it seams to work

  • Administrative accounts can have authentication issues, which is one reason you shouldn't use them for e-mail.
