Office Compatibility Pack 2007 associates docx, xlsx etc with open xml converter RRS feed

  • Question

  • By default, Office Compatibility Pack 2007 associates docx, xlsx etc with open xml converter. Therefore when double clicking on a word 2007 document, a message displays saying that the file cannot be found and a dialog box appears asking to save it. We are running Windows XP SP3, with Office 2003 SP3, and are encountering the issue when opening office 2007 and files. Checking the File Associations in Explorer shows that the Office Compatibility pack has associated docx, xlsx, with "Open XML Converter" by default.  We are running Office Compatbility Pack SP2

  • Hi,

It will be due almost certainly to an incompatible third party add-in.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htmwhich may help you diagnose the problematic add-in.

If this issue persists after removing all add-ins, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/921541

    Hope it does help.

  • Hello, we've got the same issue for a few weeks (probably an update that was applied on all the PCs of our company with WSUS).

When any of out users tries to open (with Office 2003 SP3 under Windows XP) an Office 2010 file (docx, xlsx or pptx) the file doesn't open directly : The Microsoft Open XML Converter request the file to be saved on the PC (as doc, xls or ppt) and, then, Users can open it.

    This is very annoying.

Would you know which "recent" (we recently received it on all our PCs but the update may have been "stuck" in waiting mode in WSUS for a while, sometimes 3 or 6 months, before the WSUS admin decided to apply it on all the PCs) update could cause that ?

    Thanks for your help.
