WSUS Export fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to export from 2012 R2 with a SQL database to a disconnected 2012 R2 with WID.  Any suggestions on how to correct the following error would be greatly appreciated as I have spent more time that I probably should trying to find a solution.

After successfully backing up the files I run the following in PowerShell to export the metadata

      cd 'c:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools'
      .\wsusutil.exe export w:\wsusupdates\export.xml.gz export.log

    which results in the following

Updates are being exported. Please do not stop this program.
Export failed to export updates. Please look at the log file for error
      details.
Fatal Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

The last portion of the log file is

      <Update UpdateId="414bc762-d168-42bc-ae43-97a8828ef575" RevisionNumber="201" Title="windows8.1-kb2973114- x64"><Files><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\D1\0AA8ED9F44573DAE6B9326C59C1EA1C92A2EF5D1.psf" /><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\3E\BBFDB34758D4B6D2F842B1FA2F90936A3CB9513E.cab" /><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\AE\D91D0BC1BB2CC0B183DFFE0B4FCBAF78280A3FAE.cab" /></Files></Update><Update UpdateId="74f15387-bc02-48be-afda-32caa8940bc7" RevisionNumber="201" Title="Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB2973114)"><Files /></Update><Update UpdateId="e318151e-2597-43df-9669-ac7d42742e34" RevisionNumber="201" Title="windows8.1-kb2972213-x64"><Files><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\38\5283534B6AE766D15FEBA8FB558C85D1CC1DC838.cab" /><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\60\54CCA86E85774EDCE81E5D3D42A9442143E48B60.cab" /><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\10\61C4E1801F28F6AE8EAFEDD1732A24D451FA3410.psf" /></Files></Update><Update UpdateId="228676f3-8545-444c-a7e0-4df7b9c2b4d6" RevisionNumber="201" Title="Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB2972213)"><Files /></Update><Update UpdateId="560601fe-ea1f-4cf8-8297-ce4831fc4d03" RevisionNumber="202" Title="windows8.1-kb2894852-v2-x64"><Files><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\CB\0FBA43B2AA19B2DCEA1013A48594F4D6CDDE49CB.cab" /><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\43\41CEA365EA07619DF60E1674A583358F68645843.cab" /><File Path="W:\WSUSUPDATES\WsusContent\5C\F40C9C077041ADCFB5402AD0CE6C9E557231035C.psf" /></Files></Update><Update UpdateId="5be19a8d-c6d0-487e-90ea-cbd29982ef68" RevisionNumber="202" Title="Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB2894852)"><Files /></Update><ExportError Message="Object reference not set to an instance of an object." /></ExportLog>

  • My solution was to blow it all away and start over. I was never able to pinpoint what was causing the error.

  • I attempted to run the update but it said that it was not applicable to my system. My thought is that it's because I'm on 2012 R2 not 2012. One possibility closer to an answer, thank you for the suggestion.

  • Craig, were you ever able to find a solution?  I've been having the same issue and cannot seem to find a solution.
