IE Tab Settings Resetting Aftr Reboot RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a user who has her tab settings in IE get reset after every reboot.

She wants to have it set so that when she clicks on a link on her desktop it opens the page in a new tab in the current window. It keeps resetting so that it opens the link in the current tab in the current window and replaces what was already open.

I have already ran an SFC /scannow, reset IE settings, Disabled IE and re-enabled after a reboot.

The user is running Windows 8.1 and is on a domain. There is nothing on the domain that should be resetting her IE settings. Any ideas?

What security package do you use?  This symptom is often caused by something doing registry protection.  Then a possible workaround is to boot in safe mode, hoping that an inteferer is not present then, making your change, rebooting in safe mode, confirming that the change is persisting in that mode, then booting in normal mode and hoping that the inteferer will then help make the new setting(s) persist due to its "protection".

    Good luck

  • Hi CDK929,

The main issue is to configure the Internet Explorer to open links in new tab, right? Did the issue only occur with this user?
Usually we could configure it here(Tools\Internet Options\General\Tab\Always open popups in a new tab).

The related registry key is :"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\TabbedBrowsing", "PopupsUseNewWindow" with value "2".

Please check the value of the registry keys after restarting the machine.
As Robert pointed, the registry keys` change may be protected. We could try to boot into safe mode to change the value.

If the issue persists, we could try to create a new account and login with it to have a check.
If all the users came across the issue, please run "RSOP.msc" to check whether there is any related group policy has been deployed to this machine.
Computer Configuration (or User Configuration)\Administrative Templates\Windows components\Internet Explorer

As a workground, we could try to keep press "Ctrl" when we open a link. It will open the link in a new tab.

    Best regards
